Captain Brandon Scott was getting tired of dropping out of FTL in the middle of dark empty space in between galaxies. The new FTL engines meant that the Intrepid was the fastest ship in its class, but how far it would travel at constant speed depended on a lot of unknown factors, as no ship had ever travelled beyond the Milky Way before. The whole crew was still asleep when Brandon placed his hands over the FTL lever and closed his eyes. "Please don't let it be in the middle of nowhere again! Please, please!" he said to himself and pulled on the lever, bringing the ship slowly out of FTL speed, opening his eyes to behold a blue planet right in front of he ship.
"Finally!" he shouted. "Results!" he added and proceeded to let everyone know of his discovery, announcing over the intercom to everyone to get to their posts.
"Are we home?" Richard winced at Brandon from the doorway to the pilot deck, rubbing his eyes.
Brandon didn't reply. He just turned and smiled from ear to ear.
"We have to calibrate those shitty FTL drives!" Richard said and took a seat behind Brandon, and ran a complete sensor sweep. "We're flying blind without a star map!"
"That's what we're here for!" Brandon winked at him as he directed the ship to a steady orbit around the planet. "Scan for life forms!" he commanded enthusiastically.
"Way ahead of you!" he replied with a frown. After a few seconds, he replied with matching enthusiasm: "What are the odds? First planet in a new galaxy and life forms abound!"
"Lieutenant Anderson, get your ass over here!" the captain shouted.
