A little too much alcohol didn't improve my outlook as I walked home - mostly managing a straight line - in the rain that was turning the ground slowly into mud as I took my usual shortcut through the park. Thankfully I had a couple of friends to help me on my way - there had been several disappearances recently in the park and I for one didn't want add to that figure personally.
"It was a good night" I said, making sure I spoke slow enough to make my words clear, "until the damn rain."
"There's plenty time to make up for the rain yet" giggled the woman on my left arm, "don't worry."
I smiled, and heard Carl laugh. "You get all the luck, Marcus" he said, his own voice slurred. I agreed with him this time - this girl was more than attractive. Wish I could remember what line I used to pick her up. Must have been a scorcher. Thinking about wishes -
"Just wish this ruddy rain would stop" I said under my breath.
Just as I said that, I realised that no more drops of rain were pattering down on my head, and glanced up. A clear night sky, a full moon, stars bright...
"You've got your wish" the woman said with another giggle, and I lurched to the left, as her support vanished suddenly.
"What the-" said Carl, stopping me from falling completely to the ground. "Hey, where'd she go?"
I glanced about. She was nowhere to be seen. I stood up, steadying myself.
"Where'd did all the lights go?" said Carl, looking about. I glanced around and saw what he meant - no streetlamps, no lit windows in the distance, no car headlamps on the roads by the edge of the park... the park...
"Um... Carl, where are we?" I asked.
"In the park" he said, his voice unsure, "we must be..."
"Don't remember this bit of the park" I said, looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings in the moonlight. Tall trees, with an abundance of leaves that even in this poor light looked green, despite it being late autumn, long uncut grass, the ground underfoot felt dry now...
"Park park park" laughed a voice, "humans gone and lost their park - park park park."
"Who's there?" shouted Carl, spinning about, trying to trace the source of the voice, and almost falling over. He managed to knock me over in doing so though. "Sorry Marcus" he said.
"I'm here, but where are you? I'm me, but who are you?" the voice laughed, "Who are you and where you be?"
I shook my head, sitting up in the grass. "Stop laughing" I said, "we only want some help, some answers..."
"Answers answers" laughed the voice, "questions questions. Always time for laughter. Not always time for answers to silly questions."
"We're not asking silly questions... can you tell us how to get to Maderson Avenue?" I asked, firmly, fighting an urge to shout at our tormentor myself. "Please"
"Since you asked nicely, to the side!" the voice replied. Still we couldn't work out from which direction the melodic voice came.
"What do you mean, to the side? Which side?" shouted Carl, his voice growing angry.
"Which side? Whose side!" the voice continued, then with another laugh, "the other side!"
