I'm finally getting rid of Norton, which I hate because it slows my comp down to a creep. A tin can on a string is almost as fast.

I know there's freeware and shareware out there that does anti-virus, pop-up blocking and other Norton functions without taking up so much memory and running so many processes.

Anyone have any suggestions? I want something proven to work.

Thanks! :)

Avast

It's what I use. Works like a charm.

AVG free edition.

When I first saw the name of the thread I nearly didnt come in after the classes I have just taken;)

First reaction was to yell oh god no and run away very very quick

I just added that today........Norton was becoming a whore. I was ready to dump my whole disc and start over.

I would love to get rid of Notron, but every time I try something goes wrong and it just wont go away. I downloaded Avast, but many of the options don't work because that blasted Norton is still there.

For Virus protection I use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0.1 (got it for free )

For Popup blockers I use a combination of Spybot S&D Resident and SpyBlaster.

For a Firewall my DLink Router has one built in but I also run the XP Firewall.

So far I am hacker free, virus free and spyware / popup free.

Go onto Norton's site and download the removal tool, it should take all of Norton away.

Cool, thanks, I was worried about getting rid of it after the horrible experience of the last time.

You can also download it from MajorGeeks.com too.

Ok, you asked for it.....

Keep the Norton utilities if you have them and just dump the AV and security bull.... the utilities do nothing until you tell them to.... The windoctor is great for keeping your registry and shortcuts in line.

Avast is my AV of choice....

Zone alarm the free version is a great Firewall and getting better.... Windows firewall is a sieve not a firewall. it takes me about five seconds to get through it..

For pop ups and adware malware, try AdAware and Spybot search and destroy
Spybot is now checking for 66,600+ known malware and spyware bots....

All of these can be downloaded and are free through downloads.com

Easier yet, dump windows and download Linux...

ETA: If you haven't already done so, download Firefox and leave Internet explorer only for updates....

FINALLY! Norton is now banished from my computer forever! :D Thank you so much for the suggestion Abs, I've been stuck with a non-working Norton for three+ years now.

I'm gonna stick up for some of Norton. The NIS 2003 works well on modern machines and keeps up with most of the new virus trends. The new bit of software, Norton 360, is designed to use the processor when you're not, instead of hogging it all the time and comes with some exceedingly nifty backup software. Everything in between is the spawn of Satan and appears to be specifically written to eat your computer.

I'd recommend investing in Norton 360 personally. My view on free antiviruses is that you tend to get what you pay for. There's nothing quite so motivating as money and, as the complaints against the old versions of Norton on this thread have shown, if it does a shit job, people stop buying it.

uh-oh, too late for my suggestion. :)

I use Spybot Search and Destroy, and Superantispyware, both freeware. As long as you update every week you won't have a problem.
I've not used Norton for three years now and have never had a problem.
Of course you need a decent browser like Mozilla as well.

I found that Norton and Macafee both let through viruses and trojans.

Changing your email address every now and then is also a good idea.

PCTools AntiVirus is great, too. I just run a scan every week or so, and I haven't had any problems. It's also free. :)

ClamWin -- http://www.clamwin.com/ -- is also a good free alternative. Use it at work instead of AVG for the Windows Terminal server because the Free AVG states it is only free for personal use. Use the Linux base project Clam for scanning incoming mail into the work network.

Thanks all. (Hi Geekster.)

Okay, now, Firefox and Mozilla. How are they different from IE and how are they better?

Firefox is strict. It doesn't take any weird undocumented workarounds. It's small, and fast. It is NOT a target for every hacker with an ax to grind, so a lot of the shit out there isn't interested in fuckin with it, like they are IE.

Even if it weren't all this, it has Stumble Upon. That's an add-in. Brilliant. :D
