Tell Obama And Dodd: No Backroom Dealing, No New SOPA

Dear Stella:

They still just don't get it. Chris Dodd -- the head of the Hollywood Lobby -- is bragging that he's working on a new insider deal to push through SOPA-like legislation.

He had this exchange with the Hollywood Reporter this week:

THR: Are there conversations going on now?

Dodd: I'm confident that's the case, but I'm not going to go into more detail because obviously if I do, it becomes counterproductive.

THR: Did you feel personally blindsided by Obama over SOPA?

Dodd: I'm not going to revisit the events of last winter. I'll only say to you that I'm confident he's using his good relationships in both communities to do exactly what you and I have been talking about.

Hollywood and Obama should've learned: No form of censorship will be acceptable to Internet users, and we're fed up with corrupt, back-room deals that are driven by the rich and well-connected.

Any major Internet policy changes should be negotiated in the light of day, so the millions of people who'd be affected can have their say too.

Please tell President Obama to reject Hollywood's backroom deals -- just add your name.
(We'll send the White House an email with the petition text.)

You can read Techdirt's take on the revelations over here.

Jesus tap-dancing Christ.

It's obnoxious and exasperating, but not at all surprising.

Hollywood: if you want to stop making money, the quickest way to do that is to make the entirety of American EXTREMELY ANGRY WITH YOU for taking away their censorship free internet. CONSIDER.

Fucking wankers.

LIKELIKELIKELIKE.

It's not going to end, you know. These people want to protect their perceived profits, and they will spend a lot of money to do so. Hell, they can HIRE people to work on their behalf.

We-- we have to protect our freedoms. And we can't hire people. We have to motivate ourselves, over and over and over again. We have to stay vigilant for the most abstract of reasons

It's wearying.

That's what they're hoping, that we get tired of fighting them and just let something slip through. It's the same tactic used for the warrantless phone records searching, etc. And, they hope, there will be at least some apathy on the part of people who feel they have nothing to hide (and don't, at least *now*):

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

i feel like this is one of the biggest reasons why shit always hits the fan no matter what happens. People spend most of their days just trying to get through the day. Feed their families, keep their jobs, maybe eke a little big of enjoyment out. And those with the power and the power to abuse it have nothing to do BUT abuse it and find ways to keep everyone else from preventing it. Hell, it frequently seems to be their ONLY job. "How can we fuck people over today". While Joe Schmoe is tiredly chopping onions to try to make some dinner for his family after a long day of working, lawyers, markters, etc...etc... are reviewing ways to make a profit from each second of his day.

I know how much mental energy I have at the end of the day. It's not much. And I'm just in school still. It will be worse, soon, in clinics. It will be worse when i'm in an internship. I may not have the mental wherewithal to summon for "the good fight" for...ever.

I have a hard time blaming people for not fighting. It's really easy to feel like an worker ant against a kid with a magnifying class. It takes so many ants and a lot of energy to summon the strength and resources that Power Moguls have against everyone else. It's just so...defeating :(

Not saying one shouldn't try, of course. I'm just pointing out that it's definitely a problem that is difficult to surmount as a society. Those without power just have so much more to DO that it makes it just damned ridiculous trying to rally up against those abusing the power they have.

I'm too young to be this tired and bitter -_-

Thank goodness for the internet!

We used to have envelope-stuffing parties, and getting people together week after week...

Wasn't really sure where to put this but SOPA is dead and now ACTA is too.

ACTA Is DEAD After European Parliament Vote

Today at 12:56 CET, the European Parliament decided whether ACTA would be ultimately rejected or whether it would drag on into uncertainty. In a 478 to 39 vote, the Parliament decided to reject ACTA once and for all. This means that the deceptive treaty is now dead globally.

This is a day of celebration.

This is the day when citizens of Europe and the world won over unelected bureaucrats who were being wooed and lobbied by the richest corporations of the planet.

The battleground wasn’t some administrative office, but the representatives of the people – the European Parliament – which decided in the end to do its job beautifully, and represent the people against special interests.

The road to today’s victory was hard and by no means certain.

Standing up for freedom on July 4th, who would have thunk it?

Good. I hate this shit, it HAS to go away , the IP climate is out of control.

And I say this as a content provider whose shit is beiong torrented and shared till I bleed, and who is being railroaded by my peers every day to wig out and send takedown notices, and I can't bring myself to do it, just can't.

Neil Gaiman nailed it - people who share your shit were never going to pay for it in the first place, move on, make money on those who will pay.

Oh but it isn't over yet. The conservative parties want a new voting at some point and are taking the issue back to some law committee thingy, so the it isn't quite settled yet. Unfortunately.
