More or less I read 6-8 books simultaneously, all the time. Many are awful reads, and a few are captivating. Lately I'm curious about what makes some books excellent, and most meh.
Naoko recommended AMATEUR CITY to me. Its as boring as a TERMS of AGREEMENT form for a software download. I read the initial 40 pages 3 times, and its as flat as old Coke at room temp. Nothing INTERESTING happens.
At the same time I read 2 Brit memoirs of the American Civil War, and theyre equally spellbinding. One gets off the boat and comes upon a body partially buried, someone the rats dined on; he was a local asshole. The rest is one bizarre event or landscape after another. The other Brit memoir is the same. Both are INTERESTING. They remind me of BLOOD MERIDIAN. Its not dull at all.
I cant name one how to write book that says shit about how to be interesting.
