Interesting Thing Happening with Votes and Ratings

After a long time away from writing, I am back at it again. I have recently posted two stories,

Honey, Syrup, Cream
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=330121

Angel's Vacation, Pt1: The Beginning
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=340112

The first one has surprising few reads but, oh well. It is the second one that is strange. It went two for two for two. (Two readings, two "1" ratings, and two negative feedbacks.) The readership has since been rising quite nicely, now over 11k. The votes and rating score started to go up too. The votes went into the 40s and the score went into the high threes. (Low for most of my stories but given the poor start, I was pleased.)

So now, the votes have gone down and the score has gone up. So how does that happen?

It may seem like I take this voting thing seriously but I don't even take the writing all that seriously. It is just that weird stuff seems to go on with my stories (sometimes positive, sometimes negative). I guess I really don't understand how the process works.

Happy "Optional Winter Celebrations Based on Your Alleged Secular or Non-Secular Preferences" :D

Hey there. I'm new here also and have picked up on certain voting trends. Incest and "romance" seem to fair best at this site - neither being my cup of tea. My first story, written only a few months back, still varies madly around that 4.5 "Hot" watermark. It seems as though when it hits or passes it, a few strategic low votes suddenly pour in to keep it just below. I chalk it up to content. If you follow the backdoor stories there are apparently some fierce haters of anal sex who keep a vigilant eye on such stories and authors out of spite ...unless it's written by a female, then everyone votes high of course for the obvious reasons. I will check out your stuff though.

Ever hear of the "Elephant Grave Yard"? There is also a "Grave Yard of Lost and Strange Votes". I've heard is is physically someplace outside Omaha, but I can't really swear to it.

The "Official Explaination" is that there are sweeps that remove double and spurious votes. Also if a read votes then leaves a feedback the little thermometer thingy will add a second vote that eventually gets swept out.

But I perfer the Grave Yard explaination, personally.

Welcome back btw

Votes going down and scores going up usually means a sweep happened. although votes can go down and score also. multi votes from one person are sweep among other things. No one is quite sure what is all involved, which is a good thing. If the trolls knew then they would find ways around it.

The holiday writing contest just ended which means a heavy sweep or two just went through.

Yep, and I'm so glad.

Apparently since one of my stories has attracted the attention of "he-who-shall-not-be-named" by reaching a certain number of votes the score has been steadily declining. I mean, every single vote must have been a 1 in order to lower the score with that many votes already cast.

There was a big sweep the other day and it lost 40 votes - and the score went up to where it was before he and his minions started tanking it.

So disappearing votes are goooood.

:rose:

Yeah... I got swept a couple days ago... Lost half the votes on my latest. (But look at the humor top list) :D

I'm not saying why but the day after a contest ends is the best time to find out what the scores really are. :D

And the day your number of votes drops is the only day you can be reasonably certain your story is being ranked accurately...

Thanks for all the replies. So is there a way to initiate a sweep in older stories?

They do this for all stories, I would imagine.

The story I was discussing was posted here in 2003.

And it has already received another couple of low votes and has dropped a percentage point again. Most annoying.

Honey, Syrup, Cream [Erotic Couplings]

Angel's Vacation, Pt1: The Beginning [Loving Wives]

The first one has surprising few reads but, oh well. It is the second one that is strange. It went two for two for two. (Two readings, two "1" ratings, and two negative feedbacks.)

Others have covered the disappearing votes, so...

The first story is in Erotic Couplings which is the catch-all category and has on of the lowest readerships levels as a result; there isn't enough consistency to develop a commited readership. Relatively low Views, Votes and Feedback levels are normal for that caegory.

The Second story is in the Loving Wives caegory; a category that has not one but two devoted readership demographics and as a result every story has an anti-fan base as well as a fan base. Stories in the Loving Wives category will generally have scores lower than the site average because one demographic or the other will down-vote every story. It's also a category that seems to have a lot of "malicious" voting an thus a high rate of "vote adjustment" during sweeps for fraudulent and malicious votes.
