Interesting Painting

My avatar - discuss.

Or you could find it boring. I've never been a fan of Magritte, but I was reading a bit about this painting in a recent book on feminism.

I think it will be up for awhile.

I saw this in person recently and it was much more disturbing up close. It sort of mesmerizes you as your mind bounces back and forth between "it's a face, no it's a body, etc."

Apparently the painting stirred up quite a controversary if I remember it correctly.

It's not boring. I mean, it's okay looking. If the artist is trying to share some deeper meaning or vision I ain't getting it.

The artist on his work: "My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question 'What does that mean'? It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable."

I thought as much.

Hey Lav...where is that link to the painting you wanted? I have been looking for a print of it, but it helps to know exactly what I am looking for...German Expressionism is a little broad...

its interesting but i can't decide if i like it or not

it makes a good av though i like av's that are different and stand out

i think its interesting in that it appears blatant at first but its actually quite subtle in what its trying to say i think

When I was in LA we went to the LACMA (LA County Museum of Art) and started this game sorta. One of us would cover the others eyes and lead them to a painting or sculpture. When they uncovered your eyes, you had to say the first thing that came into your head when you looked at the painting. It was really fun. Hmmm...that could be a thread.

The first thing I thought of when I saw your AV was Danny Bonaducci. *shrug*

it made me think of those corny lines you hear such as you have beautiful eyes ... and i would give anything to be able to kiss you

this painting perhaps shows what those corny lines really mean :)

i've decided what it means :)

i think the painting is rather ugly to look at ... its a painting of a woman without a head

i think its saying that women without a head ... without brains ... without thinking and thought aren't as attractive as women who use their heads

i think it diffinately has strong feminist qualitys ... and i do like the painting ... its a great av lavender you have wonderful taste

Personally, it isn't on of my favorites... When I see a naked woman, I like to see sexy, and this is not sexy because you don't get any facial express. All it is is the hips-chest of a woman, doing nothing, but wearing a wig. :/ And I don't like the color brown, too much brown. My opinion...

sexy-girl, although I appreciate your take on the painting, I have to throw my two cents in.

I think the painting is about reducing women to the sum of their sexual parts. That seems painfully obvious to me.

I'm not sure I appreciate a man painting this. That in itself makes me wonder what side of the coin he was on, the reality or the awareness.

Did he ask raise the question because he needed to know the answer, or because he wanted his audience to be aware of that point of view?

On a more personal level, I find the painting to be extremely erotic, and not disturbing at all. That a woman can exude her sexuality through her countenance is quite a palatable ideal.

LOL.. We see how Michelangelo thought of them... What else could they do but please each other?

It kind of solves that problem I hear women complain about:

"My eyes are up here!"

(and I've never had this said to me ;) -scout's honor)

perky its interesting to hear your views also

i think often paintings and art can be a mirror into your soul ... each person see's a painting slightly different because everyone is different :)

lavender, I think you shore got a purty mouth, even if you do have a little bit of hair on your lip. Gimme a kiss.

I think you're right, sugah.

It's why we discuss it. I'd hate to find that everyone saw everything the same exact way as I see it.

Perspective is such a wonderful experience.

I thought it was painfully obvious as well. Thus, my title. The discussion I thought would occur is not what the painting means, for I thought that was obvious, especially with my title. I thought it would be a discussion of the reduction of women into their sexual being.

<grin> I don't need to perpetuate that.

I know it exists. I'm aware.

Is your point to make others aware of the societal reductions that exist?

Is the painting your pink ribbon?
