The market is still there if you have a respectable publisher with good expectations, not eyes on movie deals. Also the writing needs to be as good as anything for the adult market and the plots and tropes need to be varying and even experimental.

Young Adults are an age group that are far older mentally than we were back then with a ton more information at their fingertips.

I had read that article when it first came out last week. There are some decent points made but as some comments after the article pointed out, Slate also posted an article in 2005 wondering if the end of YA fiction was nigh. Seems to be a theme that re-occurs.

The topic is broad and open. You response seemed fine to me :D

I felt it was kind of rant-like. My thoughts are way too jumbled about this subject.

I will say this: Teenagers have a very sensitive bullshit meter especially when it comes to things adults do. While other adults are crowding around you going, "Hey, good for you! You wrote a strong female character who punches dudes in the face and has steel running through her veins which gives her the power to read minds and be so apathetic to those around her that they'll instantly fall in love with her and follow her on this rebellion against a world power so stupidly evil..." Etc.. Those teenagers are groaning and wondering why they have to read the same series over and over.

At one point there were like ten different books on the YA market with the word "Crow" or "Crown" or "Throne" or something like that in the title. The blurbs on the back were so similar and benign they created a bingo board and passed it around social media.

And then you have the contemporary books with their super special quirky kids.

There's room for all those types of books. I am a big fan of stupid quirky, stupid romance, stupid paranormal, but gosh dang.. give me a story.

It's unfair to the intended audience. It just feels like a bunch of adults trying to live through this young, mousy-haired child.
