I thought you had to add someone before you could chat with them? Apparently not, as I just had someone I didn't know pop up an instant messenger screen and start sending me messages? That's a bit disconcerting.

You have to set a preference to only accept messages from your friends list.

Annoying I know.

I'm using Yahoo. Do you know how I would do that? I just ran through all the preference options and didn't see anything for that. Thanks.

I think there is a button that says "reject all anon messages" but I can't remember where it is in pereferences I'll have to look.

edit- found various answers:

on the messenger go to messenger at the top of the window and then click preferences. under here you should see an option called ignore list. here is where you can check the option of who can IM you.

On the menu bar at the top of your messenger box, click on messenger. Then go down and click on privacy options. Then choose ignore list and you can ignore anyone who is not on your messenger list. Unless you want to leave it open, then just put the name that is by the vulgar

I get the occasional late-night message from some bot program asking me to check out a webcam. It's annoying, but only happens once in a while.

You can always put someone on permanent invisibility, but you will still see their messages.

Thanks GG and Slyc. Looks like my options are to be invisible or click on "Report as spam" when the message comes up. Hopefully this won't happen too much. I just found it very disconcerting.

In Yahoo messenger under preferences go to Ignore List. There is a button there marked "Ignore Everyone Not on My Messenger List". That will stop the Anon cruisers ;)

What's really disconcerting is when one of the boxes pop up and you see that it's being addressed to one of your secondary profile names. When you log on, all of you logs on, but they're only going to find secondary names by really searching through the member directory.

Secondary names? I opened my im with my screenname from here and I made sure it doesn't display my real name. It goes with my email that also only displays my Lit screenname.

Ahh, I see.

Until the bots more or less took over a few years ago, I used to hang out in Yahoo Chat quite a bit. To that end, I had my regular handle, aldarras, complete with profile and several alternates that I used now and then. Some were variations on aldarras, others used my other computer handles like Fax or The Blue Wizard, and then I had specialty names for some of the RP chats (thunderclap for superheroes, and michael_belsam for vampires, for example).

Oh, and my Christmas handle, burghermeister_meisterburgher hehehe

I'm always 'invisible' to stop unwarranted messages, but every now and then one slips through the net. I just ignore them.
