"Inside Falwell's Moral Universe"

Here is a link to the audio of the comments by Falwell and Robertson for those who are not familiar with them. The audio gives a better indication of what they said than a transcript, IMO.

A note, this link is from Consumption Junction so the page it brings you to will be flanked by porn advertising. Its the only place I know of an active link to the audio, thought a heads up might be in order for those at the office, etc.

A Prime Example of

the reasons behind my decision to be an atheist. Religion is the province of the irrational. It demands belief in that which cannot be proven. It condemns as heretical the questioning mind which challenges it because that intellect rejects the irrationality.

Whether it be Christianity, Judaism, Islam or other, there is the common thread of belief in some "higher power", that man's purpose in life is to serve others, the negation of man's right to his life. This of necessity then puts the spokesman of this "higher power" as the intermediary between the "great unwashed masses" and the "higher power". And then, of necessity, this "enlightened" spokesman must and will be the one to prescribe the rules by which other men are required to live.

Falwell is a bit more prominent that the Pope but his views as expressed are not particularly divergent in principle. Falwell, Robertson, et al, advocate what is essentially a collectivist view of man and life. And the degree and severity of control they wish to exert over the lives and property of others while presently is less severe than that of the Taliban, is still essentially of the same genre.

And notice that the self-appointed religious leaders put themselves at the top of the hierarchy as do similarly motivated political leaders who are pushing a similar agenda, i. e., control of the lives and property of other men.

The difference is that religious leaders must recruit volunteers for their subjugation; politicians have granted themselves the authority to conscript their chattel.

IMO, Jerry Falwell needs many, many years of therapy.

How much difference is there between a man who says that God "allowed" the events of 9/11, and one who says that God wanted him to do it?? Perhaps they should lock Bin Laden and Falwell in the same padded room.

These people are disturbed. Just disturbed.

I'd heard he'd blamed it on the Lesbians, what really surprised me was that he hadn't suggested bombing Lesbia ...

I dated a Liberty girl for 18 months. Gave me a little different perspective as far as Jerry goes. While I don't excuse his 9/11 bullshit, the press does see him as enemy #1. The only thing scarier to me than the religious right taking over, is the freedom of religion being lost.

Lavvy your so funny

I remember I was watergated when I started my Falwell bashing proer to the teletubby ncodent here on lit. I remember you as one of the people saying that my falwell bashing was pointless.

But now that Falwell bashing it is all the rave to point to Todd and rub it in my face.

I bashed him first and most fundamental christians bashed him first long before he ever made ridiculous public jestures that warrented the medias attention.

in honor of my posting five hundred timies i'm not even going to get me a peice of this thread.

all i'm going to say is PLEASE!

I am only about an hour and a half from liberty. Where did you go to college if you don't mind me asking?

i couldn't resist posting on a thread that included the words "falwell" & "moral" together

i just love oxymorons

Falwell doesn't speak for any god, but the one his fear-mongering religious zealots have created. They need zeal to cover for their lack of substantive thought on the evidence of a Creator. Atheism needs the same.

Nah, I think atheists do just fine without fundamentalist zeal, thanks. ;)
