See it all happened like this... I was the family animal. Not blood family but still the family animal. They had taken me in when my old man died. Showed me exactly what my brute strength and tendency to completely ignore the rules could do. A mob animal. Problems they didn't want to dirty their hands with they sent me. I was very good at what I did and it didn't matter as long as they were guilty. That was till my piece of shit older "brother" fucked the wrong guys girl so instead of having his own flesh and blood cleanup his own fucking mess he sent me. I was to pick up the duffel of cash from the docks crew then find this scum bag and kill him. Never leave witnesses.... Never did... Till that day. Scumbag had a wife and kid and was willing to start a war over his "girlfriend" picking my dumbass brother over him. Killing him was easy when I saw his wife and kid I... I broke the one rule the family animal or anyone else never breaks. I left witnesses. I took some money from the duffel told her to forget this bum forget this town and leave and never come back. Didn't take her two seconds to agree and her and the kid ran. I guess so did I. Cross country stealing the money and getting the hell out of town.

Days of driving I found a little a little nowhere town. The kind that never knew anything about the real world just their little slice of repetitive simple boring lives. The type of place anybody hunting me would never look.

The plan... Lay low for a while in this dead end place then move on... Keep moving on. Well whatever cosmic dirt bag is running the show down here like some people believed in he or she had just begun fucking with me. Especially after I finally decided to blend in more and eat at this little diner that clearly hadn't gotten the memo of what century this was. But it had Kayla and that spelled trouble for me. She was beautiful... Beautiful trouble for a killer on the run like me... And even I didn't know the half of it.

She was almost the only waitress in the diner. The owner cooked and Kayla pretty much ran the place. She had heard there was a stranger in town who was helping out at the garage she hadn't met him yet and after her last relationship... A man was the last thing on her mind. She was rebuilding her life and the owner was protective of her. A kind old soldier who found out he had a nack for cooking in the army of all places. Garrett had helped the sheriff run her no good monster drunk of a fiancee out of town but he would always wander back and torment her life till they would run him off again. Old Sheriff Davis would have made the Mayberry police look like tough but in this sweet sleepy little town he seemed just right.

She did finally get to meet the new mechanic one morning as he finally came in for breakfast like a normal townsfolk all did. She couldn't believe her eyes. He was tall... Powerful... Tattoos... A few days scruff on his cheeks that looked perfect for him. That long hair and icy steel eyes. What was a gal to do... Why did he have to be so stunning like he had walked out of one of those romance movies or novels.

-------------------------
(Scene idea)

His troubles had found them due to her trouble. Now dragged into the bathroom of an isolated cabin her ex was caretaker of for his violently screwed brother she could see what all they had done to him and he got to see the beating she had taken at the hands of her coward ex.

Now see my adopted bastard brother seems to think he is worthy of such a beautiful little plaything as you... Then again so does that baffoon ex of yours so you seem to have feelings for my brother you will get to decide when he dies. Right here right now you will give yourself to me or Jackson there will shove his head under the water and drown him... Your choice doll and little brother you could drown yourself instead of watching me take what I want from this little slut... Your call but you will be happy to know after last night just like you even her ex will never touch her again.

Kayla walked around serving the locals their coffee and breakfast as she did everyday. Garrett cooked away at each order and talked with the local sheriff and Jack who owned the town garage.

So Jack heard you got a new guy helping you out? So when you gonna bring the kid around or does he not eat?

Jack chuckled.

The boy is different I will give him that. Ester from the library met him yesterday when that jalopy she calls a car broke down again and she took one look at him and asked him if he was just going to pick her car up while I worked on it?

Sheriff chuckled.

Yeah she told me you had some out of town bodybuilder helping you rip cars apart.

Jack laughed.

The boy ain't that big but clearly very used to hard work and heavy lifting.

Kayla could hear them as she was handing Ester her hot tea and and toast. Seemed that was all the woman ate for breakfast for as long as she could remember. Ester looked up at her and smiled.

Kayla have you met the new mechanic? He seems like a real sweetheart... for an out of towner that is...

No Miss Ester I haven't. He hasn't been in here yet and I seldom drive the car for it to break down.

She heard the door chain rattle but didn't look over while she was talking to Ester. Till she heard Jack call out.

Here's the kid now.

Jack spoke up.

Bout time you decided to eat more than that slop at the bar kid. Have a seat. Kayla when you have a minute kiddo can we get some more coffee.

Normally Jack got extra coffee himself since he has been a regular at the diner since he was a kid and worked in the diner before taking over the garage guess he just really wanted to show off the new guy or show her off. They all seemed to want to find her someone after James turned out to be a drunk abusive monster. Dismissing it she walked over with the coffee pot nodding to all of them till she felt strong eyes on her and looked up into his eyes...

He glared into the flames, watching as they hungrily ate the paper on which he had written pieces of his story. He didn't need the written words to know what it said, though it was a type of therapy to write it all out. However, he didn't dare let the pages fall into the wrong hands, hence his blue eyes watching the flames devour the paper. Even as it burned he remembered what he had written.

--------

They called me the animal. I was big, bigger than most, and I liked to work out so I had quite a few muscles. It was also my temper and attitude that earned me my name. I wouldn't say I was out of control, but I have been that way in the past. Most couldn't understand what I went through, what forged me to be who I am. I just reached a point where I decided to fuck the world before it fucked me.

This made me valuable to the family. Even though I plan to burn this paper I don't dare write their name, we'll just call them "The family." They took me in when I was young, a teen with a lot of pride and a hard on for the bastards who murdered my folks. With their help, I got my revenge, but perhaps that's another story for another day.

I guess you could say I was beholden to them, It took time for me to grow strong enough to get my parents' killers. Time that I grew close to the family that had taken me in. I was loyal to them, they'd been loyal to me. I became The Animal for them. I was the one sent in to enforce family law. People just didn't fuck with me.

My "brother" second in charge of the family screwed up one day and ordered me to clean up his mess. He slept with one of the family's rival's girls. I went in under orders to clean up the mess. I had no problem taking out the son of a bitch rival. However, I was forced to kill him in view of the woman and her child. I knew the family's laws, no whitnesses. I have my own code though. One that the family didn't know. The killers had raped and murdered my mother first, making my father and I watch. I swore that day that I would never kill or hurt a woman or child. I chose self honor over family honor. I stole the money and let the woman and child go, to make a long story short.

I knew the family would never forgive me, they all had bad tempers and long memories, so I fled, jumped on a train, and headed west. Hell I even borrowed, ok well I stole some kid's mountain bike to travel even further and faster once getting off the train. That's how I got here.

He watched the flames flicker and go out taking with them the last of his words. Spitting on the ashes Daryl stood. Perhaps Jack, his new boss was right, perhaps it was time he tried to be social. It could only help him blend, right?

For weeks Jack had said something about going to the diner. He finally decided today was as good a time as any to go.

He didn't bother to shave, he so rarely did. He did once a week before church. Not that he wanted or gave two shits about church, but everyone in this tiny ass town went and therefore so did he.

He arrived at the diner, already in his clothes to work in Jack's garage. He had intended to sit on his own, but when Jack waved him over he reluctantly took a seat beside the older man. Taking a menu he examined its contents. He barely looked up at the waitress as she approached with coffee. He found himself lowering the menu slowly to take a closer look though, this woman was pretty gorgeous. His interest showed him it'd been too long since he had taken a women for a tumble. He cleared his throat to cover his staring and lack of a rapid response. "Hi, what do you recommend on here?" He asked indicating the menu.

She smiled. It was almost strange to see anyone look at a menu they had so few outsiders stop in. Brushing a stray curl behind her ear she casually let her eyes pass over the tats and scruff before finding his eyes. Her smiled warmed a little more.

Garrett actually makes a really good steak dinner platter. All local grown and raised.

She bit her lip slightly. There was something g about him that screamed danger but it didn't matter. Those eyes so cold yet fiery.

Want some coffee while you make up your mind?

"Isn't it breakfast time?" He asked a tad confused about her mentioning a steak dinner, and then realized that she might be trying to get him to come back later for dinner. He nodded to the question about coffee.

He looked over at Jack, who was half way through a plate of biscuits and gravy. "Good?" He asked by way of a question. Jack nodded, his mouth full of the meal.

When the waitress returned he couldn't help checking her out a bit more. He tried not to let it show though. "I think I'll have what he's having," he finally said jerking a thumb towards Jack.

She nodded and sent back the order. Little place like this regulars ordered whatever and Garrett always made it. Moments later she was headed back with the food. He scared her a little but she chalked that up to her own past... Maybe. He did look gorgeous... She couldn't imagine why someone that looked like him was alone.

Jack watched him.

Kid you know you don't have to stare at her in silence... Talk to her.

Ester spoke up from her table.

Jack have you told your new helper about the orchard festival? After all it is next weekend.

She waved to the young man if he looked over with that motherly smile she gave everyone being one of the oldest people in town and held no qualms with speaking her mind.

Perhaps he could escort Young Kayla there.

She pointed to the waitress who was trying to ignore being the topic of conversation.

He accepted the food with a somewhat gruff thank you. He tried to eat in silence, as alone as he could be in this crowded diner. However Jack was having none of that. He shrugged at the suggestion thrown out by Ester after offering her a small smile in return. His white teeth stood out against his tanned skin, darkened from the sun.

"Not so sure that's such a good idea Ma'am. I don't know her and all." He said. Even so his eyes continued to watch her. There weren't a ton of women of the right age around this small town. Kayla was almost it, and with her long dark hair and eyes, and the curves her uniform couldn't completely hide, he couldn't help but to notice. Daryl knew that he needed to keep a low profile, but if he refused to socialize entirely, he would stand out more than if he managed to just come across as standoffish, he wasn't sure anyone would by shy, but surly he could do. He was different when he was drunk though, he got loud sometimes, liked to laugh, even flirted with the ladies more, but he was quick to fight. With the family he'd never cared, he would get drunk start a few fights and no harm no foul, but here he had to be more careful.

Ester was unmoved by his response.

Well young man you won't get to know anyone if you don't try and what would be wrong with getting to know our Kayla?

A young boy sitting in a wheelchair near his uncle looked over adding matter of fact.

He can't be any worse than Steve... And anyways he don't look so tough I bet I could fight him if he hurt our Kayla.

Kayla finally spoke up with a soft smile. Matthew had been wheelchair bound since the wreck that took his parents and had watched lots of movies while he was recovering now feeling like he was a tough guy even though he couldn't harm a fly.

Matthew I know you think your young self the town tough guy but be nice.

He could only shrug at Ester's words, "Spose you're right ma'am." He said non comittally.

He smiled over at the kid in the wheel chair, "I dunno kid, I just might be able to take you, but you look pretty tough so I won't push my luck." He grinned, so there was no condescension in his voice only teasing humor. He'd always considered himself good with kids. "Well shouldn't you at least ask Kayla what she wants?" He asked finally, trying to throw the focus off of himself, and also gage her reaction to the suggested match.

Kayla shrugged with a slight smile. She never really thought of herself as attractive or anything like that thanks to all the complaints on her looks and such by her ex.

I think I could show the new resident around the festival...

She bit her lip a little looking at him.

He let his eyes examine her as she spoke. He felt a bit railroaded into this. He had planned to lay low, dating a local, even innocently as he hoped this was did not really fit those plans. Although it might let him blend. He finally gave a shrug, "I suppose that would be fine." he said offering her a slight smile, before he went back to his breakfast.

"What's the festival like?" he asked, figuring someone would answer.

Kayla smiled she loved to story of what started the town's festival.

The only soldier who survived WWII had collected different fruit tree seeds from all over the world and would mail them home and brought alot home with him. His mother and father and fiancee planted them all along his favorite area near the river and every year at harvest time we celebrate his return home and the gift beauty and hope the orchard represents.

He listened as she told the story as he ate. Was this town really that sentimental? It just didn't really fit his world, or his history. He nodded as she spoke though. "That's pretty neat." He offered.

He rose a minute later after finishing his food, "Guess I should be off to work, Nice to meet you." He seemed to hesitate searching for her name, and Jack filled it in for him

"Kayla."

"Yes, Nice to meet you Kayla." He said. "I guess I'll be seeing you." He said, his eyes sweeping over her again, and his thought as he turned to go was, this could be worse, at least she was attractive.

She smiled as she cleaned up the plates.

Nice to meet you too Daryl... And don't let Matthew scare you too much. He may be our resident "tough guy" but honestly he wouldn't harm a fly.

She winked with a soft laugh.

You should stop in more often.
