Having spoken to Chantily recently about the midwife and birthing service available in the Uk I decided to have a little look at the various options for women in the Uk. I came across the Independent Midwives Trust that does exactly what it says on the tin, only they're in danger from new legislation that would require a particular kind of insurance that won;t be available to independent midwives, making them practicing midwifery illegal and reducing choice for pregnant women.

The website to find out more is here

Where is Logo?

I live in the US or I'd certainly sign.

Certified Nurse-Midwives "caught" both my kids - they were both born in a free-standing birth center.

Wonderful experience, trauma-free births and very healthy kids.

You've got my support.

Logo?

And no, I'm not pregnant before anyone asks, but it's a definite possibility within the next five years, hence why I'm so interested/concerned... so do it for me, pleeeeease :D I might benefit a few years down the line.

Logophile.

She's a midwife. Fought legislation over it.

It was after researching hospital procedures that my husband and I chose to go to a birth center.

My mom is a retired Director of Nurses, and she had concerns, so she came and toured the place. She loved it.

And she and my dad came during the birth of our second child, they babysat daughter while hubby and I were busy. They loved being able to see our son so soon after delivery.

In fact, we had the baby wrapped up and brought grandparents and daughter in the room, then pulled the blanket back so daughter (who was 4) could be the first one to say - "It's a boy!"

Wonderful experience.

<nods> things are slightly different over here, but I would be very loathe to have the hospital interference if I could avoid it at all. I am open to the idea of epidural and ceasarean if i *absolutely* had to, but I'd really rather not...

Have you read Tina Cassidy's book, Birth: A History? I've been recommending it to everyone, it;s fascinating stuff... really specialised social history. I was hooked and so was my mum... she loved pinpointing the period during which my sister and I were born (after compulsory shaving, but before waterbirth, that kind of thing!)

Where's Chantily, anyway? Haven't sene her online today - you ok darling?

I signed one that was at the hospital for it. Some of the midwifes were going around with one. I'll get the hubby to sign later.

Good :D !

Something to bear in mind if you did decide to do it again - I've read up and it seems like a really good organisation... fairly reasonable cost, too, considering the service provided. It's just sad that the NHS can't learn from them and have, maybe, a subsidised service for those who want it or something...

I dont think they would allow me to have a home birth so would only work if they come to the hospital with me. Which is an option and a good one actually.
One I had a c-section and two i released so much hormones to help the hips spread that i ended up on crutches and a belly sling. I'm now full blown risk it seems.

My friend says I don't do anythign by halves ;)

well, a lot of the midwifes on that site seem to offer VBAC if that's something you want to do, but yeas, even just having one as companion and advocate would be good - should stop problems like you had before, anyway.
