I'm relatively new to this site. My stories have strong ratings (a few in the top 100 "erotic couplings") yet the # of views is low in a lot of cases, and my vote count is low as well. I have had 1 of my stories, "Stacey the Temptress Ch.3", sit with a perfect vote of 5.00 for 3 weeks now, but has been stuck at 9 votes.

I was wondering if any fellow authors had suggestions that would increase readership, and get more votes. I have a story, "My Girlfriend's Best Friend" with over 90 votes! And I have noticed many stories get well over 100. What am I missing? Please help!

Ha ha, rename the story Stacy the Slut for starters. Also, additional chapters draw less votes. The advantage to other chapters is that they draw additional readers to your earlier chapters.

Thanks for the tip, Daughter, and thanks for your thoughts. I have too little time to be chatting on this forum. If I feel I can contribute, I will, but you will notice that it won't happen much. I just wanted some opinions, if you don't want to give it, than don't.
I'm following up on this thread because I'm curious as to the responses I get, but I don't normally read them (like I said - time constraints).
As for feedback, I don't really get into that for the same reason. I will, however, try harder to give advice/compliments to author's of stories I read since I enjoy them myself.
I have voted on every story I've read on this site, so I haven't been COMPLETELY passive!! LOL!

One question...so does this mean I don't get the # of readers I should because I haven't been giving feedback up to this point?
Thanks for your time with this.

Hello and Well Met X,
I too have had a limited amout of time to read and post here, however that has very little to do with views. Still and effort to give as well as you revieve will be appreciated even if it's in small measurements... telling established authors you don't have time to read their responses to your posts is hardly a way to get other authors interested in your writings i dare say. The number of views seem to be more dependant on the story title first, and then description of the content, at least that is how i choose a story to read for my personal enjoyment.
....just my two cents

X-factor. This ain't rocket science. You might not have googobs of time, but don't expect others to invest more time than you're willing to give.

Do you realize how many authors and stories are here? Give us a reason to read you. I don't think taking time to participate whenyou can is asking too much. Show up ocassionally. Pat a peer on the back and give him a thoughtful reply. Fluff is okay. Substance will gain you readership.

Peace,

daughter

well, I must say, I tried it and it worked!
I gave credit to a new author where credit was due, and as a result, she read my stories and commented back. Well done guys and gals.
Now that's what I'm talking about! (and kittykat, i said i do check replies to my post, i just don't have time to post!)

thanks again!

Ok, as a newbie here and having just started a thread announcing my second poem, "Lips", I'll provide another voice on the "please read me " side.

I appreciate what daughter is saying, and I have no qualms about posting here, provided I have something I want to say. I have read this board off and on for awhile, and have provided feedback on occasion under a prior user name (I particularly enjoyed some of tigerjen's poems).

On the other hand, I know the regulars here are far more well-versed (so to speak) than I am and are more likely to have something more constructive to say. I received a nice comment back from one of the regulars on here on my first submission ("A Lit Night Before Christmas"), and it meant a lot more to me when I realized who it had come from. The comments of those who are held in high regard by their peers on here carry much more weight than those of a newbie or unregistered reader (not that those are not appreciated).

So, I hear you daughter, and I'm posting :)

In case you're interested in reading my work, here are my threads:

A Lit Night Before Christmas: http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59476
Lips: http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60651

X-Factor's question was a two-parter: how to increase readership and how to get more votes. I've heard that the competition is tough for eyeballs on here and the more visible a presence you have, the more likely people are to read you.

I've also heard (from WickedEve's thread: http://www.literotica.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59355) that a good description makes a big difference, as does including a link to your work of course.

But what about the second part of his question, how to get more votes? I noticed on "A Lit Night Before Christmas" I got 5 votes in the first 20 reads or so, and just one more in about the 100 reads that have followed. I put a note at the bottom of my submissions soliciting votes and feedback, what else can one do to increase votes from the readers you do get?

I have found with a couple of my stories that I have the views but not the votes. Actually after the first couple of weeks it did not bother me as much as i thought it would. To me the main thing is that they are being read.

I now find that I am writting for the enjoyment it gives others, not on how many votes I get.

Sorry this doesn't answer your question, but It is just a single person's point of view.

Also if you are interested here is the link to my favorite. It holds a special place in my heart.

I started writing when the urge to write hit me, and found Literotica when I started looking for resources to improve my writing. I've thought about posting for a few months, and before I did I prepared myself for whatever feedback I would receive. I have my opinion of my writing, and was curious about what others would think of it.

Having posted, it is gratifying to get the "reads," but I just wonder why such a majority of the readers neither vote nor comment. It's not really a matter of wanting to compete scorewise, more wanting to know what people thought, how it made them feel. When I read something closely enough to form an opinion on it, I rate it. I guess I expected others to do the same. Do the writers that get a lot of votes get that many more reads, or do a higher percentage of their readers vote, and if so, why?

I'm off to read your story mistyc. I prefer poetry to stories, so I may not read it all the way through if it is long. But if I do, I promise I'll vote :)

I don't discriminate

Cyber, getting a comment from a regular might get your thread more attention, but I'll take a sincere comment regardless of popularity and authority.

And those of us who know a little, know so because we've been working at it. I write better critiques than I use to because I invest some time doing it. Practice improves everything.

I realize everyone cannot hang out. Just make it count when you're here. Don't post drivel or fluff and folks will pay you some attention and hopefully that will lead to useful feedback and encouragement.

Welcome.

Peace,

daughter

p.s. Despite my 'popularity' my mailbox isn't overflowing with praise nor critiques. I am learning though and I am connecting with folks whose feedback is invaluable.
