How about a slight variation? Again, there is a recently widowed father and his three sons, ages ranging from the mid-20s down to 18. However, this time the middle son is the one who morphs into the mother's role.

The oldest son could have a similar personality type as the father and be active in helping dad with the business, while the youngest son could be busy with college.
