Location: The Hickory Station
A short 45 minute train ride from New York City sits the town of Hickory. A small farming community with a lot of charm and a great old train station. At one time a major rail depot it is just a stop on the train between NYC and Albaney. Still it is a nice place to live with a population of about 15,000 with an interesting mix of commuters and farmers. The latest laptop and tractor are the two common discussions at the local diner. The old stone station is one of the most impressive buildings in town. It is three stories tall with a impressive stainglass bubble roof. The main lobby has a large fountain with a large digital screen announcing travel times and news. Though there are about a dozen tvs around getting feed from the satellite dish on the roof. The lobby has the main entrance but also a loading dock exit and roll down door for delivers. The space also has a large news stand with just about every magazine, news paper, and paper back book stacked there if you take the time to look for it. It is pretty boring during the day but busy in the evening and the morning of coarse. A short walk across the street there is Pat's Diner which is a great place for a large breakfast or a burge and a beer after work. Next to that is fenced in parking lot for commuters with a guard shack infront where a member of the police department makes his over time every week. On the opposite side next to the station is the dumpsters, an old machine shop and unused garadage, and grassy field with scrap metal laying around from its pasted days as a railyard. The other levels of the station is divided between the computer room, store rooms, and office space.... Everything is pretty normal.
This is when it gets interesting.....
Then one typical Monday night...nothing out of the ordinary mind you...a rain storm occured on that cold wet winter night. Nothing bad about that even if there where more people then normal (people up for camping, hunting, fishing and other local events like the chili cook off). There were no worries though since there was plenty of room in the old station house for those not bold enough to run to their cars or get the special at Pats. Then something different happened. Around 6:30pm...........There was a giant splash of white lite. Hell the glow could be seen all over the county. The police department even got a few calls about it. But nothing was out of the ordinary when the patrol cars ran down Willem's Way (the street between Pat's and the station) and Pat's wife's call from their apartment went through right away.....Ask anybody there on that night though they said it was like the light from a copier machine. They had no idea how right they were.....
But some of those who were there well they found themselves in a different place while staying where they were......whether they were sitting down a Pat's with a hot plate of the special infront of them or reading a book in the station waiting for their ride They now find themselves looking at the night sky. Actually they are looking at it in space. A glance around it seems the 3 arces which the station and Diner sit are like a raft fly through space....If that isn't odd enough you can bried. A Dome has be constructed over the whole space.....at lease looking up it seems like a dome. White beams interlocking at gold circles with clear material inbetween. Seems like a piece of the of earth has just been ripped out. The area still has power and if one was to walk around you would see all the lights are on including the street lights. The ovens still work and the tvs are still on though they seem to show reruns up to the day of the flash. Alot less people. but still a good number of you are present (as many as PCs want to join.)
OOC: If you have read this far please look into making a character.
Well you came on a train and now your on a cosmic adventure. You don't know the planets around you and the station seems a bit different. Through your exploration you find that the toliets never run out of paper, the fridges never exhaust in food and there is always something good to read. There is much to find in this little area of space and you will but this is by no means the adventure. Once we have some characters established I will post this next bit in detail, but on all the TVs flash the face of a regal looking man with a white beard and monocle. He thanks you for joining the Galactic Patrol, and tells you there are thousands of other "ships" like yours and the earth is always a great recruiting ground and tells you of your first assignment.
So characters are anyone and have anything you may find in a train station or grabbing a bite at a Diner. Leaves plenty of room for possiblities. I am also allowing players to have 2 or more characters but they have to have a relationship of some kind. Two businessmen up for a weekend's fishing or a husband and wife grabbing a bite, a pair of plummers working on a drain or a yougn couple waiting for a train so they can run way together.
So thanks for reading and hope some of you like this idea of mine. Been kicking it around for awhile and you never know what people think of it until you submitt it to the general public....I think the people on Lit are among the best and creative minds when it come to writing. So characters and assignments you would like to do....though I have a great pulp sci-fi idea for an assignment and the next one, but this is a thread with a modular feel to it so ideas are welcome. So fellow cyber residents of Lit let me know what you think.....
