In the news.

Anyone else get inspired by the Astronomer CEO fiasco? I've been laughing myself silly over it and an infidelity story I was planning has taken a fun little turn.
Run with it!

Let's see how close your story parallels the way that one turns out in real life! (Let's face it, that story isn't going to just disappear.)

Oh, yeah. I don't think it's the first time a couples' cam has outed a tryst, but not for somebody quite of that high a profile. The news immediately evoked a funny IRL "appearances" thing for us.

Just before COVID, my wife and I would occasionally go out to a nearby hotel bar as someplace to have a drink mostly to get out of the house, and maybe to see and be seen. We'd dress up a little; it was a nice bar and not one of the two dozen nasty dives in our small town. Now I was a normal-looking middle-aged guy. However, she is the beneficiary of some fantastic Scandinavian genes, always a head-turner, her appearance 20-25 years younger than reality, and she dressed for it. We're still "lovers", so the occasional PDA might sneak in. Our banter always amused the bartenders. After about a year of this, one night we were holding down our usual spots, and whatever the subject was, it was mentioned we had been married for 30 years.

We almost had to pick the bartender up off the floor. "We [the hotel staff] talk about you guys all the time and we swore you two were having an affair!" We look to each other, smile, and I say, "I guess we are."

Made our day.

On the serious side, there was a recent AH thread suggesting that 18-24 year-olds don't date like they (we) used to. I postulated that one of the problems is the fact that cameras are everywhere and they have long memories. Sneaking away into a dark corner for a little bit of teasing affection, foreplay, or more can cause serious issues these days given our increasingly intolerant society. We can thank (anti!-) social media for that.

Had anyone heard of this Astronomer company beforehand? There's rumours it was a marketing stunt...

If they hadn't suddenly leapt apart, looking guilty as sin - or over-acting? - hardly anyone would have cared, probably even their spouses.

I hear the cool nightclubs nowadays have either a no-phone policy, or a sticker over the lenses policy. Some theatres have gone for no phones, and phone crèches like in the 1990s are making a comeback in restaurants. Will be interesting to see how people work to reclaim private moments in the next decades.

Or, just claim any photos of them are just AI and it never happened?

As a sidenote-not sidepiece- I couldn't name one Cold Play song and have no idea how they're seen as big enough to have been a Superbowl halftime act. This is the best thing that could happen to them.

No, not given the outrage engine that runs at max RPM over here. I wouldn't doubt that "couple" and their families have been doxxed already, even if it was staged.

I think LW provides a useful case in point.

Not really. They've sold more than 100 million records and other than maybe U2,have probably been the biggest mainstream rock band in the world for about twenty years. (Which personally, are not facts I am pleased to report)

Coldplay has been one of the world's best-selling bands for over 20 years. Their total sales exceed those of Journey, Guns N Roses, and Prince. I don't imagine they'll be giving this latest incident much thought.

Attention is attention and it can't hurt.

Okay, I have heard this once or twice, but I see why I don't know them, I'm into much heavier less mainstream material. This is way too whiny.

But good for them.

Basically, they have built a career on being the huge commercial band that Radiohead decided they didn't want to be.

Coldplay are one of those bands that no-one seems to admit to loving, yet have sold a huge number of albums and concert tickets.

Even more so than Ed Sheeran, who it seems to be acceptable to like nowadays.

Yeah, I've heard this one, too. Never associated it with the band name. But I'm too much of an oboe snob (i.e., classical music) to pay much attention to popular forms, though I find songs in minor keys appealing. They require musicianship, versus, say C&W, and its 1-4-5 and lazy, twangy vocals about his girl running off with his pickup truck and his dog. Please.

As far as "whiny", I rarely listen to lyrics. They could be quoting from a car repair manual for all I care, I listen for what's underneath.

Could that be a function of the target demographic and age?

After college, when adulthood hit, excess free time to discuss and debate music, bands, meanings, importance, etc. evaporated.

We increase our buying power but aren't as likely to talk up what we do with it.

Coldplay is pretty inoffensive. I can see a Coldplay concert lending itself to simply being an unchallenging night out and solid for tag alongs/friends/hangout backdrop.

And with the state of the world, god knows we could all use more dependably restorative nights out.

Though I can imagine Chris Martin drafting a song about the incident, if not for publish, then for fun and whimsy.

Yeah...no to the spouses not caring.
If my BF had his arms around another woman like that I'd have definitely cared.
Zero reason for platonic friends to be standing that way. If a male friend tried that with me I'd be "WTF are you doing?" Even if I didn't have a BF.
