Solar year - 2157. Following a breakthrough in propulsion technology, the Space Corps (fka NASA) has produced an engine that can propel a space-ship at almost the speed of light. It was then decided, by the World Consortium of Governments (WCG), to build Earth's first interstellar exploration vessel. After six long years, production was finally completed on such a vessel. The ship was named the Philip K. Dick, after a prominent 2oth-century science fiction writer, and was christened by the wife of the World President.
Its mission is to look for a suitable planet with an earth-type atmosphere. Onboard are a crew of 35, each one hand-picked by the Space Corps, plus one hundred individuals from all walks of life and skill-sets. Each member of the crew provides a vital role in the operation and maintainence of the ship as it travels across the void of space at near-lightspeed, or Worp 0.9, for the trekkies amongst us. The one thing that everyone has in common is that they are fit, healthy, and have been carefully screened for their ability to reproduce. Everyone on board is single, and there are no DNA defects which might produce birth defects in their offspring.
First stop is Alpha Centauri, the nearest star to us, a journey of just over four years. Passengers and crew are encouraged to intermingle, and to form relationships. The ship itself, despite its complement, has been designed to run with minimal maintenance, leaving more time for social interaction.
This thread is open to all players, but please bear in mind that this is SSF - sexy science-fiction. I am looking for people to play characters; both passengers and crewmembers. I am looking for bridge crew, such as the Commander, navigator, systems specialists, engineer, operations coordinator, etc. Also I will need people such as bio-mechanical engineer, doctor, astronomer, geologist, etc, who would be conducting experiments as the ship continues on its voyage. Also a man, or woman, of the cloth would be useful in order to conduct marriages, absolve sins, and generally be on hand to provide spiritual guidance to the colonists. If anyone wants to play a passenger, that's fine too. I will be playing the role of pilot, whose job it is to get us there, wherever 'there' is!
Oh, by the way, did I mention that sex is allowed?
Well, that's enough plot to get started, I think. So, as we make our way through uncharted space, I say good luck! Please post a character bio, and begin with a description of what your character is doing, or thinking, in the first few minutes after the ship leaves Earth's atmosphere.
Character bio:
Name: Dave Roberts.
Occupation: Space Corps pilot.
Physical Description: 37 years old; 5 ft 10 inches; 185 lbs; lean musculature; blonde hair; blue eyes; angular features; gaunt looking - but not unattractively so.
Dave was recruited into the Space Corps having proved himself a skilled pilot in the Airforce. With a number of missions under his belt, including piloting fast ships on such efforts as setting up a mining colony on Io, one of Jupiter's moons, he was the natural choice to fly the Philip K. Dick. Naturally, he jumped at the chance, and was thrilled to have made it through all the screenings.
"Commander," he said, "we have cleared Earth's atmosphere." Then he rubbed his eyeballs and tried to literally pull himself back together. Being forcibly removed from the tug of Earth's gravitational field always left him with a feeling that his molecules had been squeezed through a tiny needle by a giant plunger on the end of a V16 super-charged engine! Luckily, the artificial gravity that this crate had made it easier to weather the effects than on previous vessels, which had had no such device. "Do you want to inform everybody, or shall I?" he added. After receiving the go-ahead from the ship's Commander, he flicked on the intercom switch and said simply, "Houston, we have cleared Earth's atmosphere. Dialing the coordinates for the Sun into the navicom....now!" His broadcast, as expected, was beamed around the world via the various media conglomerates, and a collective cheer went up around the world, on the eve of a new venture for mankind. However, the only cheers that Dave heard were from the control room at Houston. Even the cheers from the passengers onboard were lost, separated as they were by several bulkheads.
