Lazy monkeys became workaholics when scientists blocked a key chemical in their brains, it emerged today.

Researchers in the US found that when they stopped the primates’ brain cells from receiving dopamine the animals worked harder with better results.

“Like many of us, monkeys normally slack off initially in working toward a distant goal,” said lead scientist Barry Richmond of the National Institute of Mental Health.

But when dopamine was blocked they became “extreme workaholics”.

“This was conspicuously out-of-character for these animals. Like people, they tend to procrastinate when they know they will have to do more work before getting a reward,” Dr Richmond said.

“The gene knockdown triggered a remarkable transformation in the simian work ethic.

“They work more efficiently – make fewer errors – as they get closer to being rewarded.”

The scientists used a new genetic technique to block the uptake of dopamine by brain cells.

Dopamine is a chemical which carries messages relating to rewards to the brain.

Seven rhesus monkeys were used in the trial. When they pushed a lever in response to visual clues on a screen they were rewarded with water.

“Without the dopamine receptor, they consistently stayed on-task and made few errors, because they could no longer learn to use visual cues to predict how their work was going to get them a reward,” Dr Richmond said.

But rather than planning to create a future generation of super-workers, Dr Richmond said the new research could be used to study mental illness.

“In this case, it’s worth noting that the ability to associate work with reward is disturbed in mental disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder, so our finding of the pivotal role played by this gene and circuit may be of clinical interest,” he said.

“For example, people who are depressed often feel nothing is worth the work. People with obsessive-compulsive disorder work incessantly. Even when they get rewarded they feel they must repeat the task.

“In mania, people will work feverishly for rewards that aren’t worth the trouble to most of us.”

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In humans, lack of dopamine is a cause of major depression, particularly and notably in drug addicts. They take drugs that flood their system with dopamine, they get happy for a bit, but then their cells, to mute things, reduce the number of dopamine receptors [so that the high won't be incapacitating]. Once that happens, when the drug isn't present, there's insufficient dopamine in the brain, and kersplat! Addiction/withdrawl.

Bring on the human trials?

"Bring on the human trials?"

Agreed, I don't see any downside in implementing human trials with severely afflicted individuals on a voluntary basis.

Since it deals with known and tested blocking methods, there shouldn't be any serious side effects.

In my own suspicious curiosity, I'm concerned what The Boeing Company will put in my Kool Aid.

I was speaking sarcastically. I mean, on paper, much of what PCP does looks good. But that stuff fucking scares the shit out of me.

"that stuff fucking scares the shit out of me."

I know...

You know the human testing is coming, followed by "spectacular results," which will bring on an FDA approval, followed by a replacement for the mental altering drugs they give kids now for ADD, followed by programs of innoculation to make everyone in society "successful."

I really like the statement;
“In this case, it’s worth noting that the ability to associate work with reward is disturbed in mental disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder, so our finding of the pivotal role played by this gene and circuit may be of clinical interest.”

I sense modified-eugenics in our future..

Hey, the most effective medication for ADD is, no shit, marrijuana. *shrug*

"Hey, the most effective medication for ADD is, no shit, marrijuana. *shrug*"

Yeah, but that's relatively inexpensive, as opposed to the billions spent on research careers.

Yeah, but the boon to hemp farming that'd come with legalization is unbelievable. And, when you consider the utter lack of R&D costs required for a marijuana treatment, pharmaceutical megacorps [read: ADM] will make a killing, even focusing just on THC rather than the plant itself.

"Yeah, but the boon to hemp farming that'd come with legalization is unbelievable."

I knew I liked you for some reason.

Not to mention the billions saved in incarceration for pot offenses.

Just because I've never toked doesn't mean I'm not in favor of a legally, morally, medically, and economically more sensible drug poliy. :)

Hemp clothing and paper fiber lasts longer, is more robust to grow, and doesn't require ideal conditions to flourish.

Then we could make accurate reproductions of the Constitution.

I agree. The stuff needs to be made legal-the world would be a bteer place.

Quite simply it will precipitate the creation of a worker drone class.

Drones do not care about pleasure or pain, only their life of endless work.

The resulting human automatons will be nearly as easy to control as robots, but with the advantage of actual intelligence.

You wanted unfettered capitalism... well this is what it all boils down to.

It is more likely to be used in a socialist environment where the joyful worker's earnings are redistributed to the non-producers.

We'll see about that, buddy.

Want to place a bet on who'll use this en masse first?

I bet the corporations will pay for this to be used as a performance enhancer for their workers before any socialist country uses it to help their productive citizens produce more for the lazy people.

Too bad we're not neighbors. I'd set up an account with fifteen thousand dollars and dare you to match it.

These are Definitely NOT the shit throwing monkeys I remember from Panama! They need more than a gene adjustment... more like a Lobotomy!!

How come this

post is reminding me of "Planet of the Apes".

I am not too sure if such technology will hinder out society.

Thanks for the article and thoughts.

Peace,
Tulip
