In praise of civility.

Crap, woman, why did you have to post this?

If I participate early, it will color and flavor the entire thread and I am loathe to do that as it is your thing.

But know this and know it well, civility is the province of pussies.

In the real world, conflict and combat, the convergence of opposite opinions, held and fought for by we nasty type A males, in all the sciences and the arts, the face to face, bone to bone, competition between opposites...is how the world works and always has.

Without us...you would still be in caves.

I couldn't help myself.

Your opinions are just as valuable as anyone else's, and they are always welcomed here.

But know this and know it well, civility is the province of pussies.

Disagreed, wholeheartedly. Diplomacy can be a VERY good thing.

It's a regretful reality, yes. However, I believe we're making progress. As we move toward a more egalitarian society, and as women gain more of a voice in it, their calming influence will do much to assuage the conflict.

Without us...you would still be in caves.

Undoubtedly. And, we are forever grateful to you for bringing us "out of the cave", so to speak. However, it's time for a change.

Hopefully not. However, people have a habit of ignoring history, and civilizations rise and fall. If the progress we achieve here is not lasting, at least we'll not have gone down without a fight.

Mck,

There's a rumor floating around, which I just started, that until he was big enough to hold the books himself, Ami's parents read Ayn Rand to him every night at bedtime.

Rumple Foreskin

One of his favorite strategies was to attack Christian cities on holy feast days, knowing that many soldiers would be in church. He would generally accept a huge payment to leave his victims alone, only to come back later and demand more riches in exchange for leaving.

Interesting guy, that Hairy Breeks.

No...perhaps a legend revived by Ayn Rand, in Atlas Shrugged of the Danish Pirate Ragnar, who stole the tax monies in gold from the governments of the totalitarian states of Europe and returned the funds to the people...grins...but neat, that Rand did the research...giggles...

Forgive me, I'm woefully ignorant of all things objectivist.

sighs...forgive me...but 'Objectivist' and simply being objective, or rational, are not really different...deny one...you deny both...you ready for that?

It takes a stronger person to be civil than it does to take up arms. But if you must fight the tides do it in such a civil way that your honour is always in tact and you always win.

[QUOTE=mckai777]Indeed. It seems we have whiled away the night.

damn...did that wrong too, supposed to be in italics, not bold...sighs...too much gin...

"whiled away the night..." parochial usage, but perfectly understood and mourned as we could have 'whiled away', the night in a far less platonic style and that would have pleased me more....

Lovely twat words, chantily....but find your self being raped by two thugs and a single guy happens on the scene...you want him to be civil or kick ass?

You really don't understand anything about anything....but..perhaps if we protect you long enough...you will learn...

Ummm...thanks I guess for the lovely insult... 'twat words' never had that said about my views before but ah well. :nana:

I require no protection though sir. I am well able to learn without hiding behind your skirts. ;)

*sigh*

At least your words can be civil, ami. Testosterone is not required for discourse. Save it for whomping some rapist's ass.

I'm a Brit, I'm a big fan of civility.

We need to realise the power of our words, yes they may not break bones but they can easily breat hearts, minds and spirits.

Think before you type- I know it's easier said than done sometimes but it's a luxury with online discussion that should be taken adantage of more :)

Civility is the oil that keeps people from grinding against one another. A society without courtesy is like a machine without lubrication, prone to overheating and breakdown.

Agreed. The luxury to revise one's words completely remains exclusive to this medium.

Again, agreed. What better time and place to extol the virtues of proper lubrication?
