Diamonds or pearls? Both!
The first thing that I do is see if there's a way that I can work in both and still come off natural and smooth.
But often the answer is that I can't get them both to work. So then I look at my plot. I don't write chronologically. I write with a framework. The framework is constantly in flux, being shaped, added to and reshaped. So I look at where the plot is most likely heading and choose the option that best fits to go that way.
