Until recently, it was generally thought that the age of imperialism ended in the 1960's, when the former colonialist powers (mainly England and France, but also the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, the U.S., etc.) divested themselves of what was left of their empires, in the face of massive indigenous resistence and rebellion. Leftist critics have long maintained that imperialism never really ended, just transformed itself into neo-imperialism, mainly by the U.S., in which control over the former colonial states was maintained by financial and economic means, and clandestine ones if necessary. Be that as it may, it is blatantly obvious to everyone now that the world has now actually regressed BACK to the stage of open, naked, brutal imperialism. The U.S. has already occupied Afghanistan and Central Asia, and is now planning to invade Iraq and perhaps the entire Middle East. Intense "low intensity" warfare is raging in Palestine, and also in the Andean region. In Colombia, the U.S. has installed the extreme right-winger Uribe in an attempt to crush the rebels, primarily the FARC. In neighboring Venezuela, the CIA is attempting for the second time to engineer the ouster of leftist President Hugo Chavez, who (unlike Bush) was elected by a majority of his country's voters-- 56%. Tensions are also increasing with North Korea, threatening the Korean peninsula with nuclear holocaust.
The U.K., the classic imperialist nation, has leapt back into the fray mainly as America's lackey, but also on its own in Sierra Leone. Meanwhile, the French, not to be outdone totally, are busily intervening in the Ivory Coast, also in West Africa. Even Germany and Japan, the defeated powers in WW2, are quietly rearming and attempting to remilitarize their societies.
A new article in the NYT Magazine, "The Burden," by Michael Ignatieff, also acknowledges this new reality. The article is headlined not by its actual title, but by (in big letters) The American Empire, and in smaller (Get Used to It.) This from the "liberal" NYT!
Imperialism-- it's not just for the history books any more!
