A friend posted a meme on FB that Trump said immigration is killing America, pointing out that he is descended from immigrants and his wife is an immigrant. It concluded with the notion that he is a hypocrite.

I know that Trump wants to control immigration, but I don't know if he is anti-immigration. I get the feeling that many liberal people believe that being in favor of immigration is synonymous with open borders.

I believe we have to work on our immigration laws, but the idea of open borders is just crazy. We are a nation of immigrants, but the way immigrants came here in the past was a lot different than it is today.

Pence called Trump's immigration policy offensive and unconstitutional...but now he agrees with it. Nifty, huh?

Trump wants to control immigration from non-WASP countries. Not immigration in general. Brits, Belgians, Dutch, Nordics and Germans are freely desired as immigrants. He wants to pick and choose depending on ethnicity and race. Fundamentally a racist POV. Like most folk.

I'm an immigrant from England. 'But that's different' I've heard that many times.

We have two German immigrants at our club who have to be damn near threatened to get them to stop using the 'N' word and spouting off about Muslims and non-white immigrants. They just don't see the hypocrisy in their statements especially when one is a Hitler lover and the other admires his SD Sturbannfuhrer father. Talk about bring their repulsive hatreds to our country! They should be sent back in exchange for a decent moderate Muslim family.

One was raised by relatives in Brazil after the war (with the Nazi SD father) and faced discrimination. He was not given full credit during spelling bees. So that is why he hates blacks (if Brazilians are black). The fact his people including his Jew hunting father put people they did not like in ovens is a reality he just can't see.

Of course he's in favor of immigration! Don't be ridiculous! You don't think he wants to hire Americans at market wages to build his towers and staff his golf courses do you?

Likewise, if he were truly in favor of returning production jobs to America, he could have sourced his Trump ties in America. He doesn't have to wait for the law to change to do that.

Maybe you could say he's just a good businessman looking after his bottom line. Then why do his hats say "made in China" ? Doesn't he think his supporters are willing to support American workers?

Part of the rationale behind the Brexit vote in the UK is that because of EU's fundamental rules there could be absolutely no control on EU citizens wanting to come to the UK.

They could be criminals, terrorists, wanted by their own country - but EU rules on free movement mean that the UK could not say No, nor deport them after they had been in a UK jail.

Free movement might be good IF the undesirables could be restricted. They couldn't. The vast majority of EU citizens living in the UK are reasonable people. We have a short-term problem with building enough houses, providing schools and medical facilities for the large numbers of EU and non-EU immigrants.

If you are an educated young person living in Greece, Spain, Portugal or other EU countries that have high levels of unemployment - and there are jobs in the UK - why not come to the UK?

The tiny minority of criminal undesirables make life difficult for everyone else.

A friend told me that America is still an experiment. We have a relatively short history. Circumstances have change, so maybe the American experiment needs to change. Maybe immigration should be restricted.

I'm not saying I agree.

Ted Kennedy's immigration bill in the 1960s changed quotas from successful nations.

Today, even the legal immigrants often come from unsuccessful or less successful nations, and thus there's more burden and slower assimilation.

Also, the notion of "diversity" often runs counter to the idea of a melting pot.

And there's no obligatory military service to force some melting.

America needs to reassess even its legal immigration mess.

A while back three shitbirds came to my door and tried to get past my wife until they discovered me with a shotgun standing behind them.

Moral: Keep the dangerous shitbirds outta your nest.

Immigration into the United States is restricted and I haven't heard anyone advocating totally open borders.

What a load of shit. You live in a trailer in a Tampa slum; who would try to get in your door and why? What the hell does this have to do with immigration? This is just your usual made-up incoherent "pay me attention" nonsense.

Or ditch the 'melting pot' and embrace multi-culturalism. Works not bad up here. They all end up speaking English without accents and generally become far less devout to whatever customs and religions their parents had back home by the generation first born here.

I know some devout Muslim immigrants but their kids born here are about as devout as Catholics are these days.

And I doubt Trump can voice any objections to eastern European immigrants. Unlike some Brits do.
