okay i have some questions about a friend of mine coming to the the U.S.

only i am not sure what to ask, if any of you have come into the U.S. or have helped a friend please help us out. he is also a lit. member.

If you haven't heard from him yet, PM Xander -- he's a reent immigrant.

Bear in mind, that things (supposedly) have changed since 9/11 and those who went through the process before then might not have current information.

I have a slight knowledge of the immigration process from watching an in-law and some friends deal with it. From what I've seen there are a few key variables involved in becoming a legal immigrant to the U.S.

• What job skills the person has. Certain high tech skills are considered critical to the U.S. ecomomy and will allow a company to bring in a foreign worker.
• If the person has a close relative to another person in the U.S. who is already self-supporting.
• If the person is your fiance and coming to the U.S. for marriage.
• If someone in the U.S. is willing to sponsor the person (i.e. prepared to be financially liable for them).
• If the person is a refugee applying for asylum.

The best way to get particulars for your friend's case is for him to go to or call the nearest U.S. embassy/consulate in his country.
