I'm thinking about going to see a Chiropractor.

I've been having some pretty intense back pain for about a month. Do they use incense and shake chicken feathers at you? I've never been to one.

Look up the history of chiropractiic medicine before you go.
Let's just say - if they tell you that you have a 'subluxated spine', then you're already dead.
And no, I would never go to one. Go to a qualified physiotherapist instead.

They do a mobility exam, ask medical history questions, do X-rays, discuss how they'll how they'll do the adjustment, no chicken feathers. I think you should ask somebody who goes to one for a recommendation. Hope you feel better soon, Ann.

See Penn & Teller's B.S. episode about chiropractors.

Here's a HINT: What sound does a duck make?

I second wq on the physio suggestion but make sure you find one that isn't going to charge you for applying a heat pad.

I prefer orthopedics, drs of physical medicine and physical therapists.

I have spent a lot of time in physical therapy, am in it now as a matter of fact.
It makes things better. I do very intensive PT, not time for stuff I can do by myself at home.

When a "regular" doctor couldn't/wouldn't help me (or at least point me in the right direction) I turned to a Chiropractor for help on my own. After just a few visits I was already feeling better. I now combine chiropractic care with massage therapy and feel much better.

My first visit was about and hour and a half long: they took my medical history, did mobility tests, explained their recommended course of treatment, what to expect etc. At first I went for weekly appointments, then every other week, now I go monthly. All my issues are pretty much from the shoulders up...I'm a mess of chaos from there up.

I know some people don't like/believe in the work chiropractors do, however for me I have found them to be beneficial. There's no harm in going to talk to a chiropractor about your issues, seeing what they have to say.

A good chiropractor can be of amazing help.

But someone who's never tried one would never know that.

Ask your friends and relations for a recommendation. The good ones don't need to advertise because they have so many satisfied customers.

I once dated a girl whose older brother was a student at Life Chiropractic College, one of the "big two" colleges that produce Chiropractors.

He enjoyed telling me the inside scoop on the place: one third of the curriculum was devoted to marketing, and in order to receive their D.C. Doctor of Chiropractic they had to pass "chiropractic boards" AND have an established customer base of 300....the latter being the biggest obstacle to a degree.

Put a piece of plywood under the old mattress.
and send me twenty, oh heck,
never mind it's free today.

you should go to a regular doctor first. back pain could possibly mean something serious, like kidney stones.

I second Pete's suggestion but I have to say I have been helped by a chiropractor. He listens and takes time. I have one that he makes an adjustment and you don't automatically have to come back unless you feel that the adjustment needs further work. He touches base by phone and makes further appointments based on your need. He has also done some work that helped with my sinus problems and taught me how to do it myself.
