I'm a new author but I've been reading from this site for over a year and a half now. Any experienced authors want to tell me about being an author? Like recommended material, editors, favored stories, etc etc etc?

Hi, Armada, and welcome to Literotica and the Authors' Hangout. :) You can probably get more tips on writing and submitting stories from the places dedicated to that info. This is a good place to hang out though, where we sometimes discuss writing and sometimes blather about politics and sometimes show pictures of our grandchildren.

One thing to remember: If you choose to enter one of the regular theme contests, ignore anything posted by Scouries, under that name or any of his alternate identities. He will just try to confuse you and try to lead you astray. The contests are fun to enter, and a good way to get your feet wet ad to get to know the other authors. There is one going on now, and it is described at the top of this forum, and there should be a thread about it also.

Welcome to the madhouse where the inmates have taken over the asylum.

Please keep all fingers, toes, and other protrusions inside the ride at all times. The trolls bite and so do some of the people around here, if you ask nicely.

You lose your virginity around post number 30 but you probably won't notice it much. You can have an avatar after 100 posts and a custom title under your name after 1000 posts. After that it is all procrastination and wasted space. ;)

Welcome aboard.

I love your very eighties handle BTW. Makes me think of the House of Hair.

I would think out in the fields you need all the help you can get staying sane.

Mourning the loss of common sense is the biggest problem in the oil fields today. That and fourth generation stupid people thanks to OSSA.

Anyway, I've never been accused of being sane. I was the guy voted by my classmates to never live to see 21. :D I've outlived most of them.

That's usually the way it works. Those boring vanilla do gooders that are voted most likely to succeed are usually the ones who somehow end up crashing and burning.

I was never officially voted anything, but at the last reunion had three people say "You're not dead yet?"

I didn't answer as I felt it was a rhetorical question. Maybe I was wrong.

Welcome!

Hi Metalarmada,

Welcome to the club -- and great handle!

The best advice I could give you about being an author is JUST DO IT. Write the story you want to read. Write for your own enjoyment. Write until it's finished, then walk away from it for a day or two, then pick it up and read it again. You'll see things you'll want to fix.

Find yourself an editor. There are volunteer editors here on the site. Everyone needs an editor. It doesn't matter how talented you are; there are things you will goof up, things that will make sense to you but not to your readers, and things that spellcheck simply won't catch. It doesn't mean you suck if your editor catches mistakes.

As far as being an author here on Literotica specifically... well, remember that this is the Internet, where Anonymity + Audience = Total Fuckwad. There will sometimes be rude feedback to your stories. Ignore the rudeness. The people who dump on what you write probably aren't even trying anything on their own, anyway. There will also be those who offer criticism which is well-intended but tactless; try to read that for what it is, and just remember that not everyone is good with communication.

And remember, you're writing here for fun. Try your best as a writer, because that's how you grow...but don't knock yourself out, stress out or make a job out of it.

My advice to you is to post more frequently than once ever one and a half years. You'll get more feedback that way.

Welcome, welcome.

You either enjoy being contrary or you didn't read his post. Or both.

Some of both, but mostly the former. He has been readig for a year and a half, but became a member today.

Welcome to the AH.

Most writers find that best way to become a writer is to read lots and write even more. You will probably end up chucking away 80% of what you write, but, with time, the remaining 20% should end up at least readable.

And, as Shameless has already suggested, write what you'd like to read. The leavers of comments - particularly the anonymous leavers of comments - are a far from reliable guide to what's good and what's bad.

Have fun.
