I've let my Norton subscription lapse because of a lack of funds. Typically I get a message from Norton every day telling me that my subscription has elapsed and I click OK and it goes away.

Today I got a whole new message from Norton and it says:

Your computer is at risk in the following areas:
-Virus protection is out of date

Open your Norton product to resolve these issues.

(BOX TO CHECK) To prevent duplicte security status alerts, use my existing Norton product alerts and turn off redundant Windows Security Center alerts. (Recommended)

And then there's an OK box at the bottom.

I clicked the OK box, but the whole message came back 20 seconds later. I've tried closing it with clickable box clicked and unclicked. I went in to Norton and shut off automatic updates, etc and rebooted, but the message came back every 20 seconds. It's horrible. Making my day a pain in the ass. Help me!!!

Well, your bottom looks really nice. :)

Have you tried rebooting in safe mode? When your computer boots up, hold down F8 and choose safe mode. It provides limited access that you can, hopefully, use to shut down the Norton's. It should at least give you more than 20 seconds of peace to figure out what's going on.

Have you tried to uninstall Norton?

Also- your email provider (also mine) offers a decent antivirus program. Install it and use it. It's free with your net.

I was also going to suggest uninstalling Norton.

I use AVG (free from grisoft.com) and have had zero virus problems in the entire time I've had a computer.

Definitely uninstall Norton. DO NOT just delete it, you need to go to Control Panel and uninstall!

Thanks everyone!
I uninstalled Norton and put another virus protector on my computer!

Good, now commence with the nonsense.

Thank goodness removing Norton didn't make your bottom look less good.

No kidding.
That would have been a real tragedy.

I'm thinking of changing my AV again - any one have any ideas...?

anything with you in it...

I'm not picky, just put a pretty girl in sight :D

Anti-Virus

I would suggest using NOD32 by ESET. It routinely tests in the 100% range of finding viruses both known and unknown. Their heuristics engine is among the best and it uses very little resources. It is not cheap, though.

As a quick aside, be sure to check the settings of any anti-virus program you run. By default, most AV programs do not scan all files for viruses. Instead, they tend to be set to scan VBS, EXE and a few other file extensions. It is a good policy to adjust the virus preferences to scan all files, since many viruses come disguised in other formats.

Also, I always recomend against Norton. My experience with Norton is that it tends to use a lot of resources and drags the computer down. It also seems to do things that are unwanted. McAffee is another I dislike because it uses a lot of resources and tends to conflict with other softwares.

I believe that one person here said they have AVG, by Grisoft. I have heard nothing but positives regarding this program. Keep in mind that it is free and that you tend to get waht you pay for on many occassions.

You may wish to check out the 100% Awards and see what AV has a high rating. Don't trust the computer magazines as they have an interest in companies, like Symantec, who advertise with them.

Good luck,
Dean

i would uninstall that nonsense I use Avast free from avast.com it updates free for 18 months once you register .. it has worked for me

Show more of your bottom.

This will show my age and technophobia, Log. I saw the thread and thought perchance you were stuck inside an anthology not to your liking.

best, Perdita
