After you have 100 posts, you can access your Control Panel. Enter the Edit Options (I think it's called... It's the one to the right of Edit Profile.). At the botom of the page you'll have something like edit (or update) avatar. Click it. You can add a custom pic you have on your computer as long as it's no bigger than 150 x 150 pixels.

(If you don't have a program to shrink down the pic far enough there's a thread on How To by Girl where people will be willing to resize a pic for you. It's at the top of How To often and can be found easily in a search. Just type in "resize" or "avatar" in a specific How To search.)
