I'm running Windows 98SE in a shitty puter that should really be used as a sea anchor on a small sailboat. My problem is privacy. I need to know if I can partition my hard drive and lock personal shit away without giving up accessability for my kids.

Can I create a locked private area for my writing and correspondence? If so how do I go about it? As usual any help will be rapturously received.

Win 98 essentially has no security. The "Logon" option protects, at most, a few password files and settings.

Putting your writings and such on a Zip or CD/RW drive will keep them away from the kids.

Oh shit! I was afraid that might be the case. Thanks Guru. Much appreciated.

Do a search for file encryption. Plenty of freeware out there.

I have one somewhere if i ever find it.

I'll check out the encryption thing. I definitely need something.

Kiwi the Zip Drive or CD/RW is probably the best idea. But encryption works in a pinch.

There is a couple of software that could help you.

One of them is:
Folder Shield can be used to conceal any
directories under Windows95/98/ ME/NT/2000/XP, completely and securely. Your personal documents, private photographs etc. are invisible, and hence no longer accessible, as soon as the relevant folders have been hidden with Folder Shield.

Perfect when you got kids that start to explore your hardrive!!!

One alternative could be to use encryption software- but I am not too familiar with it.

The removable media solution sounds good.

Hey, one thing you could do for good security is make a boot password. If you go into your bios settings when your computer first turns on (usually press delete or F2 in the first few seconds) you can get to the BIOS settings and give computer a boot password. The computer won't even turn on unless someone knows the password.

Just don't forget the password, because then your gonna have to get more technical and you will need your motherboard manual.

LMAO... It would be typical of me to do just that riff. Thanks man. I think I am going to go with a combination of all of the suggestions. I have to keep my munchkins away from the twisted fruits of their dads equally twisted mind.:D

For the writing part. If you are using Word 97 or over. There is a special option when you do "save as" where you can password protect the document.

Kiwi - I've used PGP software before (think it stands for Pretty Good Privacy). You can get the freeware version at this site and it works a treat.

Good luck with it and don't forget your encryption key
