I'm having problems submitting a story!

HELP!!! This is the first time I have ever had trouble submitting a story. I use the copy and past method, but evidently my story is too long to past into the box. Is there a word limit? Do I have to submit it in seperate sections? I need help fast, please! Story is ready finally and now I can't submit it. I tried to find the answer in the submissions guidelines but couldn't. Any help will be greatly appreciated! &

I've never submitted a story by cut-and-paste. It seems so medieval. I always upload it as an MSWord file and have never had any trouble. Even the italics format okay.

Below the cut-&-paste window on the submission page is a little "browse" box. Open that and it shows you all the files on your computer. Just find your story and upload it.

Is the Lit site compatible with Microsoft Office 98 for Macintosh? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but not savvy on sending files...

The safest and fastest way to submit a file is to convert it to a .txt file.

Make sure it is bare text and not text with line breaks then you should have no problems. The text file should also work with cut and paste into the box unless you have written a VERY long story (150,000 words+).

LOL...I always send mine copy and paste...it's so quick, plus I failed Computer 101 in college.

Maybe you could help me Cookie. My story is only 10,500 words. I understand you should be able to copy and paste stories up to 100,000 words. Have you ever had the same problem?

Are they having some kind of problem at Lit. HQ.

Several people are reporting long delays, in getting stories out. I have had an edit to my Christmas story sitting 'pending' for seven days.
OK that's my own fault - should have got it right first time.

My new story Manipulation - Part One, submitted three days ago his yet to be sent for review. In addition I have been 'locked out' of Lit. several times in the last few days, particularly mornings European time, the site seems to 'lock out' for several hours.

Are we overloading the server? Is their post box overflowing with late submitted Christmas stories?

I am not worried personally about the holdups but can imagine the frustration felt by Shaved Wench and the like.

Is there anything we can do to help if there is a problem?

I am having the same trouble Will's. (Figures since I'm operating on European time as well.)

My edited version of the Christmas Contest is already pending for nearly a week and another story the same.

Lock out happens frequently or very, very, very slow loading of pages.

you can always save your story as *.txt and then upload, that is via the little box that has browse next to it.

Should go real quick and you can have a look at what it will look like once it's published on Lit.

Did you scroll to the bottom of the text box to make sure all of your story was there or did you press preview to see if all of your story is there?

In the preview, it generally will not show you more than two lit pages worth of story. In the text box itself, the story should show up in it's entirety. You should be able to ctrl-end to get to the bottom quickly.

Compatibility issues are a big problem not because of the word processor or O/S but because of the junk that the word processors add to your text. Stuff like auto-formatting quotation marks can sideline your work. Another thing to make sure is that you do not manuscript format the story. Type it in plain text--no fonts or colors--and press enter twice at the end of the paragraph. Do not indent. Do not press it once. Make sure you properly paragraph your dialogue. One speaker per paragraph. Do not use any of the word processor's automatic features at all.

If you have problems, try uploading the document. If there are more problems, the last ditch solution is to email it to the webmaster.

soooooo glad to know i'm not the only one. i've been having brutal problems being locked out and my newest story's been awaiting approval for over a week. i was starting to wonder if my story was really unsuitable or something! While it's somewhat graphic and all, so is mostly everything else on this site. I have read and re-read my story so many times, wondering if i was doing anything wrong, and couldn't find anything. Huge relief to know i'm not alone.
While i am still just a tad frustrated, i'm not going to worry about it any more.

anyone else still having trouble? What's the average # of pageviews before a story is finally posted?

I'm not sure, but mine had 10 to 11 views before they went up.

I've been waiting for my story to post too. Kept thinking Laurel's busy with the winter contest and prioritising those entries etc.

Guess others have to wait too for their stories to post. Poor Laurel!
