...as part of an effort to raise money for Cancer research.

I have been working on organizing a Cancer Relay for the kids and youths since April. With the support of my Internship Supervisor, I have managed to approach and get the Children’s Hospital and the University Cancer Center to sponsor the event.
I have sent out detailed proposals to the public schools here. Many of the schools have shown an interest. Since this is a college town, I’ve also communicated with the Clubs and Orgs. of University and Colleges in town. We have a good number of supporters and many have pledged their time to walk/run in the relay.

Our Theme “ Free Hugs: Youths Team Up Against Cancer”. The children came up with it and I love it. :D
The events will follow the same basic schedule as the Relay for life and I do plan to make this an over night activity. Instead of the 24 hours, it will be a 12 hour Relay starting at 6pm and ending at 6am. We will have areas for the teams and family to set up camp. It will be a big Slumber Party for the kids.

The relay will have a carnival theme. It will include activities such as face painting, jumping jungle, line dancing, and costumed characters. We will also have story time with children taking turns to read aloud from their favorite books. I will be manning the very first booth…..and giving out “free hugs” to one and all who walk by. This was the idea of the children I work with at the Children’s hospital. So, on Friday I’ll be wearing my running shoes and passing out hugs.

Wish us luck.

Moonlight Elf,

I hope you don't mind but I'm printing out your post and will bring it in to work tomorrow. I'm sure my supervisor will be more than interested in it.

Fantastic idea, Moonie.

Save a hug for me, please.

I'll save more than one hug for you, Auntie.

I really am excited about this and am hoping the event takes off without any problems. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

It is pretty cool. What makes it so special to me is the time and effort the children put in to make this happen. Making this happen was hard work.....but I loved doing it.

I'll take all the luck and hugs, Vella  We could use them.

Cat,

You are welcome to do so. Let me know if anything comes from it?

I think it is a wonderful way to raise money for research and to bring children and communities together. We've had the Relay for Life here in April but I noticed that it was not very kid friendly. Since I work with children at the hospital I though it was be great to have something like that for them.

The Relay starts in two hours and the weather seems to be pretty good(although a tad chilly). Got my running shoes and my camping gear ready........this should be fun :)

Have a wonderful time and give lots and lots of hugs, Moonie

So, so, how did the relay go? You haven't given me an update so I thought I'd come asking........

Moonlight Elf,

Sorry! Been cheating using 'subscriptions' list and neglecting the 'main' AH board tonight and just saw your thread.

Hope the 'relay' went very well for you tonight.

Please let us know how it went when you return.

I'm sure there are many here that will be very interested in hearing.

Hugo

update

The relay went very well. We had a good turn out even though the weather had turned chilly. I did the introductions......I hate talking in front of a large crowd but I managed just fine.

The event itself was a blast. I gave out more hugs than I have ever before then I took my turn runing the track. Joined in the face paintings and read bed time stories with the little ones before they camped out for the night. We lit candles at midnight in memory of those lost to cancer and those who survived cancer.

I lit one for all the Litzens who have faced and one for Fairysong who is still fighting her battle. The rest of the night the older crew took turns running or walking the track. The music was a wonderful mix of Classical to Pop to the Blues to Jazz to Celtic to Indain to Japanase pop.

The money we raised is going to the American Cancer Society and we had enough interest in the event that organizing another one next year should be much easier.

Well, there you have it. Tink, I'm sorry I didn't update sooner. I've been sick and just running throught the AH.

Hugo, don't worry about not catching this sooner.
