(CNN) – Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson told supporters he will seek the Libertarian Party presidential nomination, a campaign source confirmed to CNN on Tuesday.

Johnson has been running for president on the Republican ticket since April but has struggled to break above the low single digits in poll numbers.

Joe Hunter, Johnson’s communication director, confirmed that Johnson is planning a major campaign announcement in Santa Fe, New Mexico on December 28th. A conference call will take place Tuesday night with campaign staff regarding the plans.

Word of Johnson’s decision was first reported by POLITICO.

When Libertarians say that, it in no way reflects a desire to weaken the country internationally. Not like when those cowardly Dems say it.

STFU, n00b. If you've followed politics on the General Board at all, you'd realize that this is indeed a watershed moment.

In the annals of the General Board, AJ (and various subsequent incarnations of his various userids) has never once been brave enough to take a stand in favor of someone. He has always, without fail, told us who he DIDN'T like or COULDN'T endorse for whatever reason, yada yada. Sure, after an election he'll occasionally admit to voting for some fringe candidate no one has ever heard of.

AJ publicly supporting someone in advance of an election marks a sea-change in fringe right politics here.

I don't give a shit which one of the republican clowns lose but I do hope that the loser we have now will grow a set of balls and stand up against the congress.

This is the strangest election year I have ever seen. The condition of the country is so bad and the leaders stepping forward seem to be so ill suited to the task.

Overall it looks bleak.
 
It's going to remain bleak for as long as you believe one party or the other is more fit to manage the economy and our lives through an ever-expanding and invasive government.

It doesn't much matter if it's Barack, Newt, or "My first name is Mitt..."



They're all Big Government problem solvers and hence will have nothing but negative impact on our lives.
