Who wants to talk about horror movies? One of my favorite genres, and I feel like having a long discussion about them. Favorite movies, why we are so drawn to fear, what makes something scary etc.

zodiac killer on the loose amend a teen age girl at home alone one night watching the original, Night of the Living Dead. I still cannot watch that movie.

Ya well the zodiac killer did stuff like that for the sole purpose of the infamy it brought him.

I doubt the movie is actually a trigger for murders. However it is really interesting how our brains make those connections where that movie now is related to that instance in your mind. So its not the content that becomes scary but your brain gets conditioned to be afraid because of it. Its why atmosphere is the most important things in a horror story. And why the aline in a house motif is so often used. After all who likes the feeling of being along in a house.

I like the exorcism of emily rose, but it deffinnitly is a B tier possession flick

It was not just the movie. You are right, the circumstances...contributed to the eeriness of the movie.

I still remember cop cars following around school buses when he said he would pic the little kiddies off.

So. I looooveeee horror films. It's a thing my mom and I kinda bond on so I hold it dearly and get excited like a little kid when any new horror film is introduced to me.

My fiancee' was explaining to me that we don't know how to react to movies say like The Grudge because we see this deformed, non-Human thing and we know how to react. Do we fear it? Yeah I guess. But it's more creepy than anything.
Where as like Texas chain saw for example while kinda unlikely to happen (oh wait! It's based on a true story my bad loooool) just puts plain fear into us. Because that shit can happen for real.
I really liked his point and It makes sense a bit since I prefer horror movies that are more like the grudge. What do you guys think?

I like them all! But I agree that the movies like the Grudge and The Ring had a creepy factor about them. The more realistic film that we think, oh yeah, that shit can happen in real life are scary on a different level.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was loosely based on the true life story of Ed Gein.

Verryyy true. When the first Saw came out. I was on the eedge of my seat, literally. And the ending... dont judge me. Had me sooo wound up I cried. And I promise I don't cry at everything (except maybe the fox and the hound.)
But that shit was for reallllyyyyy scary. I guess because if I think the likelyhood of it happening is good. I kinda trip out but in a different way.

Did you guys think the paranormal activity movies were truly "based on true stories?" I call BS but could be wrong.

I call BS too but I did like the first movie!

Not a true horror movie but I recommend Frailty. It is an under rated gem of a movie!

I actually have to disagree with your fiance at least in the movies he used to demonstrate his point.

First off the grudge was still a human thing as it was a ghost, therefore the spirit in the grudge isnt any more alien to us than the ghosts from poltergiest.

Second the based on a true stiey and likely to happen thing can be argued as the amertyville horror and the conjuring are both also based on true stories.

Finally the grudge spirit and leatherface are both warped human characters, they had human actors playing them and if it was about not being able to interpret how we shouod react to a non human entity then movies like, "the thing" and "alien" would also fall into the same category.

If you ever watch the special features of "dreamcatcher" their is an interview with steven king in which he discusses why he had one if the monsters in the toilet. He explains that horror is all about destroying the audiences sense of safty. We as human beings have areas were we feel safe,, our beds, bedrooms, family, with friends etc. good horror stories take that away from us and warp that safe place. For example haunted house stories like poltergeist turn our homes into scary places and that is why they resonate. The ring turned the tv into something dangerous. Texas chainsaw destroyed the saftey of being in a group. The grudge is the haunted house again but it crosees some lines that traditional haunted house stories dont. The ghost shows up in the bed, which as a kid is your safe spot, and it follows you which breaks the normal haunted house code of it remains in the house.

It is all about taking away the audiences sense of safty.

Well except the saw movies as they are torture porn. However the first one was so good as it took away choice. Normally in horror movies the creature attacks you, in saw you are given a choice to maim yourself or die.

No they werent however in the occult community their are rumors of stuff like hat happening. Which may be what they used for their basis. Still really liked the first movie though

This thread made me think of my scariest movie. Now I won't be able to sleep .

Yep which is tour scariest movie?

Personally for me in overal effect I have to go with jaws. I saw it when i was 8 and wouldnt go into the pool.

Devilish Devices

Here is my pick -
Chronos ( 1993 , del Toro )
Not too much of special effects and make up. Just a slow deliberate movie.

* Jaws of course rocks every which way. One of my all time favs.
