My current job expects everyone to work a minimum of 10 hours a day. I was clear several months ago that I would not be doing that. Someone has been noting my.comings and goings and reported to the owners.of the company. We had a meeting in which one said to me, "I dont care if you have to work until 10 at night..." to which I responded, "Thats not going to happen."

Yelling ensued. The other owner yelled "where if your gratitude to the company paying your bills?!?!" allow me to note, i took a 30% pay cut for this job, a choice I made to change indutries. HOWEVER i will not sacrifice my life for work, which is exactly what you are demanding that i do when you want me to work that much. If I am going to do that, I will do it for the green. But to work that much and 2 years later i dont even have anice chunk of savings? F OUTTA HERE.

In the end i said, "I am not being a smart aleck here but I am being upfront. If you feel the person in my position should work 10-12 hours a day for you, then I am not the right person for this job." since then I see the guy who had my job before - who was.fired - has looked at my linkedin page. Maybe they want him back. I say, go for it.

Seems to me that employers want to treat us like illegal migrant workers these days. I know its a tough job market, but.i am not willing.to be a.slave. I'd rather be.unemployed.

What are your thoughts about these unreasonable requests? Am I lazy crazy, or do you agree wih my principles? What would you do in my position?

SeanH Will get me on this!

To be perfectly honest I think 10 hours a day is reasonable.

I dont, not for what I am being paid. I took a 40% pay cut. Fuck outta here if you think i should work 10-12 everyday. I work 10 hours one day a week and that is all they get. Especially since i travel a lot and those are 12-14 hour days easily, sometime more.

You took a pay cut voluntarily so you shouldn't bitch about it.

It was your choice and salaried positions are usually expected to work more than 40. You want to complain that's fine but I don't see how it's anyones fault but your own.

I can bitch about anything I want. I told them what I am willing to do, and they can either accept it or fire me, it is as simple as that. I'm not a slave, at will employment works both ways. I can change my mind and so can they.

You said you took a 30% and 40% pay cut. Which is it?

Like i said, they can fire me. I have been salaried for almost 20 years straight now. I know the score. I work from 8:15 to 5:45 everyday, fuck outta here that it isnt enough.

If you were fine with a 40% pay cut and you still deliver the work on time, they shouldn't be bitching about a 8-hour work week standard. I say stand your ground.

Didn't you mention you quitting the job you were doing last year because of the high amount of travel? Is this the same company or a different one?

The 'now' me, would do exactly what you are doing - refuse to give up my life for an employer.
The 'before' me would have simply aquiesced and worked longer hours.
At some point in between those two me's, something happened in my life that profoundly changed the way I view life, happiness and fullfillment... and although that moment has forever scarred me deep inside, I now realise that without going through it, I might never have recognised what trully makes life worth living.
It's not money (although I recognise the need for having it), it's not career or how well you are thought of in your industry, and it sure as hell isn't how much you sacrifice for either of those things.

I know my response is a little vague. Sorry about that.

I quit that job when another one recruited me. They paid me a ridiculous amount of money, but I quit after 3 months because i hated.those bastards. Found my current job 2 weeks later, and nkw its been six months.

Yes i will stand my ground on this. Life is short;i dont i will recount my glory days of employment on my death bed.

If it's company policy you don't get to stand your ground and say it doesn't apply to you. You either do it or you find another job.

Your response makes perfectly good sense to me.

There is no comoany policy. If there were, we woukd have discussed it prior to my accepting the.position.

I worked 72 hours last week. This is the norm for my industry during this time. It's not sane and it's certainly not healthy but I do it for many reasons, I have job security, it's close to home and I love wowing in construction. I do not get paid what I used to, I took a dramatic tax-bracket lowering paycut to take this job but it's worth it. 10 hours a day is not unreaonable however if you loved your job, you'd probably have no issue with the hours. Resentment is a career killer.

No resentment. I simply decided that I will not do it.

I do understand, and salary or not, of it wasn't in your contract or hiring document that you are expected to work X number of hours, they can't fire you for it. They can make your life a living hell though. I hope you're documenting the convos. They could be a life saver.
