I always try to be both, but some aspiring authors see any kind of criticism as a mean spirited personal attack. What some of them are really looking for are comments like John P. made to Michelle's story to stroke their egos and bolster their belief that they are skillful writers.

They can become vindictive and start flaming you, or worse, start sabotaging your own stories by clicking on them and giving you a rating of one without (I suspect) bothering to read them.

MIchelle is a beautiful woman, and I'm sure that lots of men (or women) out there would say just about anything about her writing to get on her good side. If that's what she wants, fine, that's her privilege. If she wants real honest constructive criticism and advice, I'll be happy to offer it to her. But I don't lie to people about their writing.
