If you've got pets…

TY :rose: It's their favorite but I won't feed them anymore of that type til I can check the list.

One of my cats died very recently of kidney failure and she loved those little pouches of "cuts and gravy". *sigh*

So sorry to hear that. *HUGS*

Rob,

Thanks for the heads up.

While I don't feed "The Herd" wet food from the store this is good info.

Again thank you.

Cat

The cats we have now have been raised on Science Diet or something in the same price range. The shelter fed them on SD exclusively but we switch around between that and the Nutro and Royal Kanin and such so the cats won't get in a rut.

Good to know, even though we don't feed our herd of dogs wet food. The two big ones get Purina Pro and the beagle get a prescription food from Hills. She has a problem with blader stones and has already had one operation to remove about a pound of stones from her bladder.

Thanks Rob.

Ack! This is terrible! :(

Luckily for me, kitty is on dry Nutro; that's been her only brand from the day we brought her home.

This is second time in my puppy's lifetime, some pet food company has done a major recall.

Glad I went for those small specialty dog food brands... I gotta travel to get his food, but at least I know that the company that is putting food in my dog's mouth is out of business if they let something like this happen.

Well, I did have one can of a recalled food from Wegmans. Sooo many stores, brands and types. Wow! Unfortunately I started feeding them wet food a couple weeks ago because two of my older cats have gotten so skinny. I had already fed them one can of that but I won't feed them the other can.

Thanks again!

My cats got people tuna this morning, just in case their cat food was on the list. I haven't been able to get on the website yet. *cats erase all references to tainted cat food so they can continue to get the good stuff*

Either it took a few days to hit him in full force or more than was initially listed is affected. One of mine has fallen ill in the way they described. Taking him to the vets this morning to see if anything can be done. The irony is that I had started giving him wet food because there was something wrong and he had gotten very skinny but the bloodwork showed nothing. I fear this guy has cheated death one too many times.

What a nightmare. I am so glad this doesn't affect Aussie pet food.

Ever heard of the BARF diet?

Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I raise and train German shepherd dogs for our living. We have found that feeding the BARF diet seems to help the dogs in so many ways. Cats like it too and seem to do very well on it.

BARF stands for Bones And Raw Foods, it means that you go back to feeding what the dogs are designed to eat. We buy whatever is on special at the meat counter in our super markets. If there is a special on chicken leg quarters then that might be supper. We feed the meat and also the veggies raw. Sometimes when we find a good deal we will buy a lot and grind it along with some veggies like carrots and greens veggies of any type and sometimes a little sweet potato.

We find that this will cause a reduction in solid waste of nearly 50%. It also causes the dogs to have a more pleasant odor to them, and takes great care of their teeth and gums.

It is a little more trouble but I think that your dogs would thank you.
Mike

What a terrible year for consumers. First spinach, now cat food. A motherfucker can't even order a burrito from Taco Bell without worrying if the guilty morsel might be tainted.

O, for the days when we ate with impunity.

interesting question:

Should the pet food industry continue to 'regulate itself.' Won't it be in the industry's interests to clean up, on its own?

Does this incident show anything about "self regulation"?

Should there be government (US, Canada) regulation; standards, inspections?

I'm tempted to post a poll on this.

I saw a snippet on the news this morning. It appears someone dumped Rat Poison or something into the mix at the factory.

Edit: Here's the link http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17754681/

However, that is NOT the point I would make here. The real point is this -
These pets are dying because the food they are being fed causes kidney failure. Now it seems the food was intentionally or unintentionally poisoned. But that only made the kidney desease manifest itself much faster.

For years the pet food industry has been using additives to their food to make it appealing to both dogs and cats. Those additives are cumulative over the dog's/cat's life and also cause kidney desease. As a rule, cat food is worse than dog food because more additives are used - cats are fussy, you know.

The last time I looked, there were no federal or state regulations on pet food. I remember driving past the (Name Deleted) pet food factory in Tualatin one hot August afternoon, and noticing the stench of rotting flesh. They had left open rail cars filled with cow lungs and udders out in the hot sun. These same rotting parts were used, processed and canned on the evening shift. Is that the kind of food you really want to feed your pet?

How many of you have seen poor old people buying quantities of canned pet food. Do you really think they have pets? I know for a fact some of these people are eating it, because it's cheaper. I've seen it and it makes me sick.

Cow udders? Cow udders? Oh, ick.

I'm so glad that the only wet food my cats have had recently is from Science Diet, and most of the time, when they're not eating kibble, they cadge food from us.

I had the little guy put to sleep tonight. :( It doesn't seem to have been because of this though it may have helped it move forward faster. I'm gonna miss him. He was incorrigible and always had his nose in everything. I'll never forget seeing him chased across the lawn by a raccoon or catching him on top of the stove, lifting his head from the spaghetti pot with a strand of spaghetti hanging down out of his mouth.
