What would it look like?
Where would it be?
Lots of land, or a fairly small yard?
What color would you paint it? Inside and out.
What would the layout be like?
How many stories?
Basement? Cellar?

It would have to be in Edinburgh. Civilisation, you know. :D
Large plot for the ol' green fingers.
Bungalow for the ageing bones.

fantasy:
lit compound with many acres...to each a home of their own.

dream:
enough room for all the kids to stay for many years but stay out of sight. *grin*
lots of land for horses or dog rescue
i love the color red but tomorrow i might like something else. lifes too short to stick to one color.
open floor lay out. one feature i would demand is a large river stone fireplace...something we can all gather around.
i would want a huge room...large enough for a floor loom and all my spinning stuff. *so selfish* there would be another shed/garage just for lucky's wood working and my stained glass.
dont care if its one level or a squillion
basements make great torture chambers

The seaside, on a bluff overlooking the ocean.

Two stories, very modern. Lots of glass and a very open floorplan.

The inside would also be very modern. Lots of black, white and chrome. Some rooms would have color. I've always wanted a huge, very well laid out, well appointed kitchen. Black & white tile floor, granite countertops, stainless appliances and just a few trim peices in bright red for color.

As for the exterior, bright blue with white trim.

A large living room with a fireplace and a wall of glass overlooking the ocean.

A big deck with an outdoor bar.

*sigh* I need to win the lottery.

The last house we lived in in Santa Barbara was built using Spanish influenced architecture. I LOVED it.

One story, creamy stucco on the outside with a red mexican tile roof, and a courtyard in the front, screened from the road by a low wall. An archway led to the front door. Double doors led into the house, and they were made of dark wood, with a spanish-style knocker on each.

Inside it had cathedral ceilings, and the floor in the hall and the kitchen was also made of red mexican tile - expensive, but so cool to your feet in the summer.

The rooms were all huge, all had soaring, dark-beamed ceilings, and there was a walk-through type fireplace in the family room that went into the master bedroom.

If I could, I'd buy it back from whoever owns it now, in a heartbeat.

Something like this:

The Dilbert House

I'd just build this : http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/duh/

I especially like the Christmas Tree closet right off the living room. At Christmas you just wheel out the already decorated Christmas tree on wheels, and plug it in.

It would be on its own tropical island. Also on the Island would be a vacation resort for singles. I'd have a bogus vacation contest running that would award free vacations to deserving people. Sure, awesome looking women would be included, but so would stressed out deserving people needing a break (i.e. single parents, exhausted firefighters, hardworking teachers, nurses, returning soldiers and their spouses needing time to get to know one another, interesting authors, artists, thinkers etc.).

Also on the Island would be Litopia, a get away compound for Lit Authors to hang out, work, and just get away from their lives on occassion. All they'd have to do is reserve a spot online, and then show up at LAX for a free flight out to the island.

This is off of the top of my head, not like its been an ongoing fantasy or anything.

That's sooooo cool. The exterior is adorable and I love the bathroom.

Location:

Nice rolling pasture land in Kentucky (for the wife, she's from KY). Enough to raise Horses, love Horsies. Close to one of the many lakes - so I guess we're talking southern Kentucky.

House:

Not to big, not to small. Open floor plan, country style decor(wife again). Several guest houses (small bungalows, 2-3 bedrooms) for anyone who would like to stop by. Or anyone needing to hideout for a while.

Color:

Outside: White Clapboard Siding with grey trim so the summer light and heat are reflected away. Although the house should be surrounded by trees.

Inside: Whatever the wife decides. I really don't care what the colors are she has good taste.

OK, so i'm not the only one... *L*

i'm not sure just what mine would look like on the outside, but it would probably be stone. i like stone houses. With real tiles. No tin roofs! It would have to be in an area with lots of room. Maybe a couple of trees and a little stream, but the rest just open. Lots of land. Have to have room for critters and kids to run free. And there has to be an area for a vegetable garden. And lots of roses.

You guys already beat me to the fireplace thing. Or a huge central fire pit type thing. Yeah. Vella's got the right idea with the fiber room thing. A friggin HUGE one!! The kids would each have their own room.

i'm thinking either hardwood or laminate floors throughout (probably laminate - easier to take care of) with oriental rugs all over the place. Lots of pictures on the walls, but not of people. i don't like pictures of people. They're eerie somehow.

The colors inside would be much like this house (i got to pick most of them here). Soft buttery yellow walls, olive green and deep burnt orange trim, light blues and greens in the bathroom, a mix and match of color everywhere. Previously owned furniture for the most part. Nothing should match at all. Must be eclectic! :D

I'd stay where I am. The house is big enough and the lot's a good size, but lots of renovating needed. So far I've redone the kitchen and put in a master bath, but I've still got to do the living room, dining room and downstairs half bath as well as the kids' bathroom.

The LR/DR project is scheduled for the spring (if it ever gets here) and will be a major undertaking - rip it down to the studs and start over. The original construction is about 125 years old and is in serious need of leveling, reinforcing/replacing. Wiring needs a complete overhaul (some things I've discovered borders on scary). Don't know what the color scheme will be yet, but it'll have hardwood floors, a fireplace is a must (with a stone hearth of some sort) and we'll scrap the old, narrow and steep stairs in favor of a spiral one (there's already a new, extrawide stairway at the back of the house). Put on a front porch so everyone doesn't have to enter through the garage and the mrs & I can rock away our golden years.

What would it look like?

A large victorian, with a tower, and garage.

Where would it be?

North Mississippi, on the land my family has owned there for many years.

Lots of land, or a fairly small yard?

Enough so you can't see your nearest neighbor.

What color would you paint it? Inside and out.

Ouside, it woul dbe blue, with black trim. Inside, several different colors, dpepending ont he room and what I wanted to use if for. By and large though, the interior would be hardwood floors and hardwood walls, with only the trim and wainscotting needing paint.

What would the layout be like?

Large foyer, a library, Fairly utilitarian Kitchin with room for a table, a great room with fireplace, formal dining room, drawing room, and study. Upstairs would be bedrooms & baths. The tower would be my library, with wall to wall bookshelves and one of those roller laders so I could reach the higher ones :)

How many stories?

Basement? Cellar?

finished basement/Av room

I love my little house in the woods, although the area around it is growing faster than I like....

It's 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a living room and kitchen... what else do ya need..... about 1400 square feet....

I need to find my pictures of it... some people think it's a trail on first glance but it's not... it's actually 2 salvaged renter cabins with the LR/Kit built in the middle... The bedrooms have 8 foot ceilings which makes it cozy, while the living room has a wood beam vaulted ceiling to make it feel bigger....The kitchen is separated by a long (room width) breakfast bar and has a standard 9 foot ceiling....

Its paid for so I can afford to remodel and i am, slowly.....

The 6x18 porch across the front of the living room is nice and has a swing.... I've added a 12x18 porch on the back of the kitchen and a 12x12 enclosed sun deck in the back yard for those that like to sunbath nakie....

It sits on a half acres and I have no neighbors on either side, and woods to the rear of the property.... lots of privacy in the middle of a growing community..

Tex? Yours is bigger than the one i'm in now. Which is bigger than the one we moved out of last summer. All five of us.

Off to clean some more...

You know which way i've been leaning. ;)

The last house was about 900 square feet, and a good 50 square feet of that was completely unuseable as anything but storage. Another at least 200 square feet was off-limits to the kids - the house was old enough that the kitchen and laundry room/porch/mudroom thing was highly dangerous. It was interesting.

Part of the landscape.

Far from civilization

Both -- wilderness landscaping except for a relatively small picnic/barbeque type space.

Natural "earth tones" beiges, browns and greens.

I'm too old for stairs, now, so it would be at most split-level with only a few steps between levels.

Definitely a basement/cellar for storage and mechanicals.

I have't given a lot of thought to my "dream house" but I do know it would be an eco-friendly, self-suficient, almost survivalist retreat from civilization -- something almost primitive and zero-maintenance on the outside with all of the comforts of high-tech on the inside -- satelite TV Phone and internet powered by a combination of solar, wind and hydro-electric.

What would it look like?
My Dream House

What can I say. I dream big.

Where would it be?
Northern California. Wooded lands with an ocean view.

For all the problem of some F.L.Wright homes, they are, to me, the most beautiful, natural, peaceful, wonderful. If I ever get a chance to build a dream home...it's be F.L. Wright inspired at the very least.

Lots of land. Two stories. Very open layout, so the light can travel around the house, and you can smell the fresh baked bread and the coffee throughout the entire house.
The colours would be light and relaxing. Serene light green, warm and cozy yellow, tan and terracotta for the bathroom...
