if you were the carrier of a genetic defect

would it be wrong for you to breed?
what if the chances of passing it on were 20%, 50%, 100%?
what if it was manageable and the child could live with regular, intrusive treatment? what if they would need full time care for their entire life? what if they would be in constant pain? what if they had a limited lifespan?

There are too many of us on the Earth the way it is.

Why would I want to add another to the mix?

I have a genetic defect, slow wits.

All the women in my family carry the Prothrombin Gene Mutation Heterozygous.
I passed it to my daughter, and she has most likely passed it to her daughter (we'll know in a couple of weeks when bub has her first blood tests done.)
I got it from my Mama, and she got it from Omi - the records don't go back further than that.
None of the boy children have ever got it.

It's not debillitating or limiting..... we just need to be aware that we are at a much higher risk of blood clots, and so we need to go on Heparin in high-risk circumstances (like flying long distance or when taking contraceptives, etc.)

Imagine what kind of genes someone like Throb carries around. Actually the world is pretty safe. The only way he pass along his mental defect is by having sex with a woman.

I'd probably adopt. There are so many children looking for good, loving homes. I could provide that and give a child a chance.

Everybody carries genetic defects. Some are dangerous and harmful to human life, others are benevolent and enhance life. Genetic Defects are a major factor in evolution and the success of the species. If we ever eliminate all defects, we better make sure we have discovered immunity to disease, it is likely that genetic immunity is the only reason humans survived the various plagues that have ravished the planet from time to time.

Let those freaks breed! We do not want to join the Cheetah.

what about if the kid you were carrying showed up as likely severely disabled at your first scan?

^^^Miles wakes up in the morning and immediately has to post something about me.

Derp.

I refuse to breed, as I consider being myself to be a genetic defect.

i probably only started this thread because sean or ish is pregnant.

Hope to have good insurance and do PGD: Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.

I just found out about a pretty big problem I have that my kids have up to a 25% chance of having too. It's heartbreaking. Scary

I would have the kid and send it to live with Americans so it could feel superior.

Stupid

This is utterly ridiculous. Genetic mutations are extremely common.

Blue eyes
Baldness
Color Blindness
Hyperovulation
Chin dimples

Yeah, let's make these people not breed! People who shouldn't have children are those who are bad parents. Period.

that's nice dear.
carry on.

I, unlike most people on here actually have taken classes in genetics. Perhaps instead of making snarky comments to everyone on the boards, you should do something more productive? Just a suggestion.

gosh! i'm all impressed and stuff!

you must be right. nobody ever feels there is a moral dilemma when they know they carry painful, life shortening or severely disabling conditions that they might pass on. and if they do happen to worry then they're being 'utterly ridiculous'.

you're the font of wisdom. please dazzle me with more of your incredible insight, it's the most productive thing to do, because i honestly don't know how i survived this long without it.

Where is the line drawn? Chin dimples? Cancers? If you carry a genetic mutation, it's a personal choice to have children. And you may not know you have a specific mutation if it's never presented symptoms. 70% of us have some sort of bodily mutation (horseshoe kidney, breast cancer gene, blue eyes). There's no guarentee of anything. And that's the point I'm trying to make. Life is a craps shoot.

I too don't know how you survived this long without my insight.
