As this is an open forum if an idea is banded around but two people with the same start idea could write the same story but when its finished it could be a totally different story so it is not stealing unless its a story and its copyrighted thats my way of seeing it whats you views

I agree, but it looks like the overall opinion is that if you use someone's idea you should tell them, at least in forms of a "thanks for the idea!" that starts your own story.

As I said in the other thread...

If you use someone's idea here (they took the time to write up a thread saying "Hey, I like that!" or "Could I see this in a new story?"), I think it is polite to either pull up the original thread to say, "Hey, I have a completed story you may like!" or to e-mail/PM the person who requested the story simply to tell them you did write one! (If you do it "publically" than others who may have been interested in the idea will know of it, too!)

But, over all, this is a Story Ideas board. People come here with ideas in their head of what they would like to see in a NEW story. Many people even say something along the lines of, "I'm not a good writer, so I'd love for someone else to write this!"

The quote from their song Stay is my "personal quote" at Lit. It has nothing to do with the actual thread or my posts.

I think that ALL stories should be original. That is, your idea and your story. To use the idea of someone else, I feel, is theft and just short of plagerism.

As you post a story here or any other site, you may get email from readers who will suggest some ideas to you. That's a different story because the ideas are given to you, as opposed to reading them in a forum. For example, I wrote the main character in "Lesson In Biology" to be a high school student. I received an email from a reader suggesting that I write a sequel with the character going to college. I didn't want to escalate the time of the character so fast so I wrote a sequel of her going to college as a field trip.

I don't think that people shoud "steal" ideas from other people, for instance if I shared with Stranger a story I was working on and she took the idea and made her own without my permission. This forum *IS* for bouncing ideas from one person to another, for people to request genre's they'd like, and I've used it to get some feedback on ideas I have. People need to give stories their own twists, but I don't think that there's anything wrong in borrowing a little bit from others.

I think it is stealing if you DONT inform the person who had the idea that you intend on writing it, and have their aproval.

YES. I agree.

Yes and no.

Yes you should tell them. No they probably won't approve. If there is enough of you in the story then they will think, and may tell you, that you have got it wrong.

When that happened I went ahead and published without an acknowledgement at the originator's request.

Otherwise I put in "by Charm Brights from an original idea by XXX".

Stealing ideas

Are you serious, GuyJD? Or, are you just trying to provoke a response?

Most ideas posted here are so broad and non-specific, it would be crazy to think they formed the basis for a story.

Someone posts something like "I want to see stories about Lois Lane". So an author posts a story about her. I guess, according to GuyJD, that is plagiarism. C'mon, get real.

I have to agree with Alex, I really do think that Guy's comment was sort of..well...asinine.

Let me get this straight, you are saying that if I were to post this outline on this forum -

A handsome rich Black man falls in love with a beautiful white virgin.
He woos her, and wins her, and marries her.
She is still a virgin on their wedding night.
They are happily married until a white friend of his who is jealous suggests she is unfaithful.
Persuaded of her treachery, the Black man strangles her.
Later he discovers that she was not unfaithful after all.
Then he kills himself.

- and someone takes me up on it and writes the story and does not acknowledge my posting, that is theft?
If so, is he stealing from me, or from Shakespeare?
