Kim Jong Un is at it again.

On Monday, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea threatened to carry out a “pre-emptive nuclear strike of justice” on the United States, U.S. bases in the Pacific, and South Korea. “If we push the buttons to annihilate the enemies even right now, all bases of provocations will be reduced to seas [of] flames and ashes in a moment”.

Right.

But this time he may be serious. DPRK is in shit-shape, like a death spiral. Kim may see attack as his option.

Let's get political-hypothetical. A N.Korean ICBM vaporizes San Francisco or Seattle. (No, it won't happen, but still...) Which presidential candidate gains? Or will elections be canceled after war is declared and North Korea is reduced to a glowing glassy puddle? (Not necessarily in that order.)

Does Hillary gain cred because she's a reckless warmonger? Is Bernie lynched by an anti-pacifist mob? How do Tromp and Cruze [sic] exploit the tragedy?

Or suppose the N.K missile flames out in mid-Pacific. Will anyone care?

North Korea won't do anything, because they know exactly what will happen if they even tried. There would be several fields of smoking ruins from retaliatory conventional attacks.

Even China has lost patience with Little Kim at this point and honestly, they don't need his poor starving masses as a buffer against a theoretical attack that is never coming from the west.

Without China to provide cover for his insanity, Little Kim is no real military threat. Sure, he may try to drop a couple of medium range Ballistic missiles onto South Korea and watch them explode spectacularly and ineffectively when intercepted by US missile defenses. But they're simply not capable of standing up to the retaliatory onslaught alone, not without China there to play bodyguard.

Thanks for responses. Please note that I said nuking a USA city would NOT happen, but asked that if (hypothetically) it did, how would USA politics be affected? Let's brainstorm, people. Speculate. Pontificate.

Would USA lynch mobs hunt down anyone thought to be Korean? Would Obama declare national emergency and lockdown, i.e. no elections for awhile? Would a coup attempt be made if Obama DIDN'T impose a national lockdown? Which candidates would exploit the crisis most aggressively / imaginatively / insanely?
