If the female:male birth rate jumped to 4.0 due to genetic reasons

what would you speculate to be the end result for humanity? Economically, socially, politically, etc.?

Heck, it sounds like a potential role playing story. :)

Can't understand 4:0. It's either 1000000:1 or something, not 0.

Theoretically,

(more) recognition of lesbian couple rights.

More females in top positions and/or getting paid the same as thier male counterparts.

Less wars.

Time of the month public holidays or special leave.

Increase in payment for sperm donation.

Gattica situation (pre-selection of sex).

China situation. (terminating / dumping female babies).

Always knew the dominant sex would win out ;)

I think female/female conception issues would rapidly be pushed to the forefront of science...

ps- rubber reserves might run low, also ;)

Things wouldn't change much.

Except that the probability of a particular gender doing bad things would increase.

Despite their constant assertions men and women aren't as different as they think.

Actually, the male:female ratio has risen slightly - http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2001/cb01cn181.html - possibly due to lower attrition rates for males in the past decade.

Globally, this is even more pronounced: males are highly prized in many cultures, whereas females are a drug on the market - with the advent of ultrasound, etc., couples often cheoose to abort female fetus's, in China of course, exposing female infants is common in rural areas, particularly with the limits imposed on family size.

The result is an excess of males to females in a number of countries.

Why female babies? If there's 4 women to every 1 man, I'd think that women would have the political pull to put an end to that kind of misogyny.

As noted earlier in this thread, just the opposite is happening, most notably in India and China. All it takes is an ultrasound machine to determine the gender of the fetus, and a quick abortion. Of course, in extreme cases, a midwife is brought in to quietly end the life of a full term female baby.

It should be noted that although LT has been blasting China as a repressive totalitarian society for this practice, it is at least as prevalent in India, which is a democracy.

When I designed the world for my cyberpunk role playing game years ago, one of the little factoids I threw in was that some classes and tribes in the world were dying out.

Because of sex selection.

They tended to abort their girl children, yet wouldn't marry outside their tribe/caste.

So fewer and fewer each generation.

Not that it mattered much. In the year 2060 in my world there's maybe 2 billion human beings left. Most living in 3rd world poverty. Even here in North America.

I often blast India, too - they have a huge caste system there which makes their "democracy" a big fat joke. And the corporations learned their lesson from America when they went into India - look at all the pollution in the Indian Ocean.

Silicone is nicer, anyway-- and then there are hand-crafted wooden ones... ;)

If there were four times as many women as men, this thread would loop back into the polygamy thread, creating a David Lynch style time warp - a mobius strip of time, capturing all within.

"If the female:male birth rate jumped to 4.0 due to genetic reasons . . ."

- A massive increase in lesbianism and artificial insemination using sperm collected from the remaining y-types and put on ice for the future, pending advances in bio-science that would make it redundant.

- More asking of directions.

(Ignoring the previously noted illogic of 4-0. 1-0 is quite sufficient.)

My thoughts exactly. All due respect to the fairer sex, but women would war just as much as men would. It's not a gender thing, it's a human thing. Conflict and violence are in our blood.

Just ask Elizabeth I.

Last names would be carried through the female and not the male.

I fought with my husband (and still occasionally have to argue with people on the subject) to get my daughters last name hyphenated. Now she has both his last name and my last name. My familys last name is rare. My parents had mostly girls. It is important to me to hand down my last name.

Now, what my daughter decides to do with it is her own decision, but at least I tried.

-And not to completely hijack:

I think the possibility of more polygamous relationships is also a possibility. Hopefully we would end up with more lesbian relationships though, at least more open ones.

Here's my theory.

Women would have extreme political pull because of their numbers (maybe subsidized day care for working parents?), and would severely alter the market (look for more feminine-looking Nissan Altimas and larger women's bathrooms, for instance), and patrilinealism will decline.

But then when it comes to competition for mates, things change dramatically: males are no longer killing one another for women.

Men don't kill each other for women, they kill each other for the oil companies. Sheesh!

He who controls the oil, controls the fate of nations. He who controls the fate of nations, has great power. Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. Ergo he who controls the oil, has the harem.

*ducks*

Just kidding.

Of course there is the argument that she was merely doing what she had to do to mainatain her wobbly position in a male-dominated hierarchy... just saying...
