If I were moderating/administrating Lit, the GB wouldn't be such a shithole.

What do you propose to do? We can't troll them because we'd be not only lowering ourselves to that level, but they feed off that stuff, it'd only strengthen them.

The ignore feature is only good if everyone uses it, and stops replying at all to trolls, entirely.

There are no easy solutions. I think we have to keep in mind the strengths of lit, not its weaknesses.

1. Huge site with huge traffic, attracted by the stories.
2. Large constant influx of posters who are
a. literate
b. perverse
c. of all sexes, orientations, political backgrounds, nations and socio
economic levels
3. Culture of free speech and bottom-up moderation.

Lit isn't going to die any more than NYC is going to become a ghost-town.

I was part of the offspring boards at the beginning; when ultralit seemed like a sort of chatroom to be used in tandem with Lit when this place was half DOminant Chef and the other half Obama madness. Then I realised that the only way to make this place work is to stay here and make it work. Keep contributing good content.

I have cold and my crossword puzzle is getting the best of me, so I figured why not bust in and be the rain on everybody's parade? Grab your umbrellas, folks!

unprovoked racial slur?

Give an example of a "provoked" racial slur.

"Trolls" don't create excitement....smart, witty posters who hate each other take care of that.

I think we'd be better off if everyone came back and made a stand against the trolls.

I think I'd like to kiss you right in the brain.

I'm probably too newb(ile) to make any truly insightful observations. From my perspective, there does seem to be an upturn in troll presence, but I think there's more to it. I'm sure part of it must be the mass exodus, but it also seems like trolls are getting more attention.

To be fair, I'm sure I've posted in some of the more ridiculous threads, maybe to make a feeble stand, maybe because I'm not too good at keeping track of the pariahs, or maybe because it was a million o'clock at night and sinsomnia and boredom had driven me to the brink of insanity.

The way I see it, though, is that troll threads are only a baby step up from the "swap a letter from your favorite song lyric and then have anal sex with it" threads. It doesn't take any real thought to contribute, and you're guaranteed a response, however bilious. I can see how that might be appealing to newer posters. It's no big secret that it takes a while and a style to run with the big dogs, and people don't come here to talk to themselves.

Also have to wonder about the timing of it. The observation that singled out September sounds good to me, and it's hard to forget the epic waves of barking that sprung up as the presidential election loomed closer. Granted, 2000 and 2004 would be subject to the same issue, but I think it's clear this perhaps had emotions running higher.

Personally, I kind of liked the opportunity to talk with candor, but I won't fault someone for wanting to keep politics out of their porn board. And this time, they had another option. Soooo who knows. Add to that that the discourse typically led to boring, circular arguments or someone snapping and acting like a wretched asshole.

Don't know how to fix it. Less whiny posts, for one. Oops. I'll make up for it by starting a filthy haiku thread, deal?

when i first started posting, there were a number of posters who kept me on my toes. regardless of how much i disagreed with their positions, i knew i had to be on my toes defending mine or they'd best my argument. it was both challenging and intimidating because everyone knew who, ultimately, made the better argument. in the process, they gained my begrudging respect and i theirs.

many of the posters capable of that sort of argument, on either side of an issue, no longer post. in the process, variety in the threads has diminished, too. there are a lot of ad hominems. and there is a lot of demagoguery. and when variety surfaces, as often as not the threads devolve into more ad hominems and demagoguery. and i know i've thrown my share of stones.

i am torn as to the best way to deal with trolls. not bare-knuckled brawlers. trolls. part of me says ignore them. the problem with that is that they get to rewrite history as soon as you cede them unfettered floorspace. cade is a prime example of that. and part of me says go toe-to-toe with them on a regular basis; the problem with that is that you come to resemble that which you resent in the process.

No, it'll become more like Raccoon City minus the nuke.

Unprovoked: when you tell someone you oppose the draft and they start calling you a nigger.

Provoked: when you call them white trash in return.

The first fucker gets a ban if I'm admin, because the second one wouldn't have shot off if the first one hadn't started it.

Basically, I'm concerned with who instigated the bullshit. Eliminate the instigator and the problem is removed. Bet your ass on that.

Jackie, you will never leave this place.

Try it! I dare you.

You'll be up late kicking the sheets off the bed and the old lady will be sending you to sleep in the den.

CJ...politics are not what makes this place go. Sex is.

It's a place for all of us to posture before members of the opposite gender.

This must never be forgot in any analysis of Lit.

Lit is not a "porn board" despite the old saw. It's not a story board, a troll board or a political board.

It's a dating board, pure and simple.

Ignore that fact and your analysis falls flat on its face on the ice.

I didn't say anyone was leaving this place, though it appears people are fleeing in vain to places like lint and whatever.

What I said was, people like you and I will be like S.T.A.R.S. holed up in a diner with some dude doing sniper duty on the roof.

Completely surrounded by zombie trolls.

The problem with the GB is, the GB has a history of sending raiding parties to other forums when they get bored here. They installed their own people as moderators of the Playground after threatening the previous mod - a move that the ever morally indignant Rhys was in on as well. Rhys, of all people.

Like I said many times before, the GB's "do as I say do, not as I do" is the biggest fertile ground for trolls.

Very astute.

That's a great point. Arguing with trolls only makes us look like trolls. I've decided that as soon as I see one, from now on, they go on my iggy list. No matter what.

I'm part of the solution today, dammit!
Watashi mo. I put the last pseudo-political masturbator on ignore a few days ago and did another stupid same-song race-baiting alt today not but five minutes after he was birthed from [name omitted]'s rectum. I can't do this year the exact same way I did the last one. I just can't. I love myself more than that.

My solution? Iggy. No questions. No mercy. If other people wanna look at race-baiting, gender-baiting, homophobic crap, that's fine. But I won't be. And refuse anymore to engage anyone who posts as such.

My days of venting bile endlessly on the board are done. I just don't have the time for it.

Ore mo!

You know what's really funny, the trolls call you a coward for putting them on ignore, or questioning your moral right to do so. As if you're supposed to care what a bunch of nutless shitheads define as courage. And yes, Flat5ive, I'm talking about you.

And these guys have no concept about why I don't seek the attention of people who put me on ignore. No concept at all. It has totally left them dazed and fucking confused.

i agree with you.

having said that,

i've never been one to separate intellectual prowess and sex. they're not mutually inclusive, but for me there is a hell of a lot of overlap. discussion of almost any topic at a high level will catch my attention. the politics threads used to permit that to some degree. and they permitted me to identify those with whom i share interests.

What's wrong with the GB?

It seems to be pretty busy lately, notwithstanding trolls.

Two pages of a GB protocol thread and I've got one poster/one post on iggy.

THis is progress.

It's still afternoon on the West Coast, give it time. They will flood this thread like a swarm of locusts once school/work at Jack-N-The-Box lets out. During this one week, I've basically gotten the circadian rhythms of most of the alts/trolls down pat. Pretty glaring tell, really.

Hmmmmm.

You're on the right track (if your serious about making a site, I could help you with these rules), but you don't have it good enough for people to actually follow your rules
First of all, depending on the severity of the rule that is broken, you're membership will be suspended and flagged rather than have an immediate ban (all suspensions will have warnings and a ban must have a notice).

You will get a warning for:
1: Negative comments about race, religion, upbringing, lifestyle, or sexual preference.
2: Posts that include the "N" word (the post will be edited or the entire thread deleted if the word appears in the topic).
3: Spamming the board with site links in multiple posts or one word bumps.
You will be banned for:
1: Harsh accusations or threats that would ruin reputation in occupation, disturb social or private life, or create legal situations for family.
2: Posting or promoting access to illegal activity such as Torrents and Warez (Youtube and related sites not included).
3: Encouraging the sale of products (just saying "The book's a good read, you should get it," is not included in this rule).

All IPs are recorded to enforce these rules, however only the administrators may see them (moderators may give warnings and flag posters).
If you see a rule being broken, you may report it to the moderator who will take the appropriate action (mods must request take down beforehand and consider argument).
Any comments?

I can't believe you're still talking about the raid on the Playground. For the benefit of the newer 3/4 of our posters, this incident occurred in the summer of 2003.

And YOU were once one of the worst trolls here--do the names "Ishmeal" and "Byron_In_Exile" ring a bell? Get off your high horse, Mr. Death Faker.

Dunno. He's been nice to me so far, so it's probably me just being oversensitive. Think we cleared it up ourselves in the other thread.

What do you think of all that though? You're my friend here on Lit, and it's hard to see so many people go back and forth with you all the time. Have you considered just ignoring all of them?
You saw my ignore list, right? When I'm done tossing someone around I do put them on ignore. I just like to goad them sometimes and laugh while they post 20 replies and not one of them gets seen or read. When they finally realize their responses aren't even reaching me, and all they're doing is jumping to randomly thrown sticks, well, I suspect they'll probably eat a shotgun.

Or make an alt.

One thing you should notice is I don't ask for advice from the GB. In fact, I'm at a point where I am not interested in hearing very many others' opinions. There are a few people that I listen to, but I almost always get better input in real life, without the trolling and people going at me.

And at some point you just have to end the arguments and take action and throw the damned dice.

So far that's worked out well for me.
