December, what comes to your mind? Please tell and don't be shy now! Give as many ideas as you like. There's a very good reason for this, which will be announced Friday or Saturday. But ya gotta help out first. :)

So. I say December. You say:

How about conclusions, endings, finishing, that sort of thing?
Gatherings, family, community.
Warmth, survival, reliance on others.
Turning points, wheels, the Solstice (Yule comes from Iul, which means Wheel).

and dildos.

Pre-warmed, ideally.

I don't even try. And that other one, Hynde, is totally out of control, too. :D

Oh I was especially interested in your thoughts! You Southern Hemisphere folk have a totally different take on it from me. (Well except for the gifts and food part. I have ten empty holiday tins in my closet whispering "cookies! get going!" every time I walk past it.)

there is one 'December' thing i forgot. making holiday cards. the cards that are in shops here are still a majority of Christmas 'winter time' images. log fires and candles and such like. that is nothing like our Christmas weather. so i make my own cards and send them out.

darn, and i also forgot decorations and The Tree. still, y'all get the idea i'm sure.

whitewave? I haven't heard that name before.

Anyway, I think of death when I think of December.

I saw this thread, felt it looked like fun, came in to post. But, the dildo caught me off guard - taken aback so to speak. Because the dildo really covers it. Which shouldn't be a surprise find for a poetry forum: the single handed coverage of such a deep topic as December, and to do it with the mere brandishment of one simple word like dildo.

It's also a terrific ice-breaker, so:

dark mornings,
hot coffee and donuts (the powder-sugary ones),
crowded smelly airports,
crowded smelly bus stations and buses,
wool sweaters
wet wool sweaters
wet smelly wool sweaters
red sweaters
green sweaters
red and green sweaters
red hats
fireplaces
stomping boots (to stomp the snow off)
sleet
black ice
whining toddlers
popcorn balls
sentimental memories
brandy
bourbon
eggnog
hot cocoa with marshmallows
hot sex 'neath warm blankets

I associate death with December, too. Early December because my sister died then. I also think of Pearl Harbor Day and my son's birthday, which is right after Pearl Harbor Day. And white, the color white. And certain kinds of music: baroque music and this song, which always makes me think of Christmastime.

yep.

nothing breaks the ice like one of those.

always an important hostess tip.

Oh, and December makes me think of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, not the films or the plays that pop up everywhere around the holidays, but the actual novella, which is a sad and beautiful ghost story, a cautionary tale of loss and redemption.

  • Birthday (my wife's)
  • Champagne & New Year's Eve
  • College football bowl games
  • Family
  • Handel's Messiah and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker
  • Lights
  • Our annual fight over the tree (Too big! Not big enough! Is it straight? I've got pitch all over my hands! How much did this cost?)
  • Parties
  • Roast pork with apple-cider glaze (Yum! Once a year thing.)
  • Shopping, like on Christmas Eve (I procrastinate a lot.)
  • Taxes (I start fretting early.)
  • Year-end close (I do work in sales, y'know.)

Oddly, dildos (dildoes?) have not previously had any conscious or unconscious association with December for me. I'm seriously concerned that Eve may have unalterably changed that.

As far as I can see after scanning this thread no one mentioned stockings - no, not the gartered or suspendered ones - the ones that miraculously appear at the foor of the bed (in our house) and rustled enticingly when we moved. Only once did we quietly get up in the wee hours, take a look at everything, carefully rewrap and go back to sleep. It was a mystery why and how we slept so late that morning. We found the second opening such an anticlimax we never did it again.

Oh - and getting stuck by a snowstorm in transit with all the fascinating encounters that brings about.

December makes me think of death, too, Eve.

oh yeah, and my anniversary, which wil be 27 years the 16th.

Running out of batteries .. my dildos buzzzzz
Watching what other people want on the telly and dozing through The Queen
Getting plastered in the kitchen Christmas morning cooking raising my glass to absent friends
Rain
The first year Mum won't be there ..
Stepping over dogs hovering in the kitchen doorway
Listening to the motor drawn sleigh as Santa drives down our street
Whole crowd of us playing cards New Years Eve ... oh yes we certainly know how to live!
Singing to the carols in the shops
Parties
Packing for a week in Spain .. it will probably snow!
Snuggling up in bed
