If a thing's not worth fighting over is it worth having?

Cath! says she won't "fight with another woman for the attention of a man..." (in another thread, see link for reference...) which sounds fairly laudable and mature (if, perhaps, a bit out of character. ;))

As a kid I recall being told, "If it's worth having, it's worth fighting for." Does this not apply to attention from a (let's call it) say potential suitor? What makes this attention different from anything else one desires?

Will you fight for recognition you believe you deserve?

Will you fight to correct misperceptions?

Will you fight for justice?

And he is dead who will not fight;
And who dies fighting has increase. ''

- Julian Grenfell, Into Battle
Where do you draw the line?
The seven eyes of Ningauble the Wizard floated back to his hood as he reported to Fafhrd:

"I have seen much, yet cannot explain all. The Gray Mouser is exactly twenty-five feet below the deepest cellar in the palace of Gilpkerio Kistomerces. Even though twenty-four parts in twenty-five of him are dead, he is alive. Now about Lankhmar. She's been invaded, her walls breached everywhere and desperate fighting is going on in the streets, by a fierce host which out-numbers Lankhmar's inhabitants by fifty to one - and equipped with all modern weapons. Yet you can save the city."

"How?" demanded Fafhrd.

Ningauble shrugged. "You're a hero. You should know." ''

- Fritz Leiber, from "The Swords of Lankhmar"
Do heroes determine where (or when) to draw the line differently? Do men see this differently from women? Is that why we use a special term "catfight" to distinguish when women do decide to fight?

let me clarify that for you...look below as an EXAMPLE only...(for those of you who think I am talking about MY life as the attention seeker that I am. :)

Ok, Lukky...let's say that you and I were hot n' heavy and had been for a long time...and some young tartlette moved in on you...you can be damn sure I would fight to hold on to what we had...if it was worth holding on to.

BUT...let's say that Lukky was involved with someone else and had been for a long time and I just wasn't completely aware of it...I might express an interest in him but if I was told thanks but no thanks because he was already involved...THAT is when I wouldn't fight for someone. It would not be MY place to intercept and trash someone else's relationship.

Now...I also fight for MY right to free speech and to live my life as I see fit. I fight to salvage my own reputation and I would damn well fight anyone that tried to hurt a friend or family member.

Others before me have said it much more eloquently than I can:

If you love something, let it go. If it comes back it's yours. If it doesn't, it never really was in the first place.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

I will fight for integrity...the rest is small stuff.

Yep.

Well, I'm a country girl and we fight over what's ours. Nothing is going to get into my territory and take it from me without a fight.

And, well, I flat like to fight. No family reunion is complete without a good brawl.

So, essentially, if it's got any value whatsoever it's worth fighting over. Even a totally worthless man because fighting is foreplay. ;)
