Answer found: "Sahara" (no, not the Matthew McConaughey movie)

Thank you, Ryan8558 !!

I need the name of a WWII movie, possibly from the 60's

Locale: Northern Africa (I think)

Plot: The Germans are besieging an Allied (British?) position in the middle of a vast desert region. Both sides are short of drinking water, though.

The Germans can't capture the Allied position, but they can't abandon the siege and leave because they don't have enough water to escape the desert.

The British can't punch through the German siege, but they, too, are running out of water. They fake having more water than they have to trick the Germans into surrendering, something some of the Germans are willing to do to avoid death by dehydration.

I remember only one scene, where an allied soldier pretends to be taking a sponge bath and brushing his teeth, spitting/wasting the water. In reality, when -- from the German perspective -- it appears that he is dumping water out on the ground, the treasured fluid is secretly being caught out of view by a second soldier hiding behind the wall.

Sound familiar to anyone?

If you have the date of the release correct the only one that comes up is Tobruk_(1967_film).

There were a few others that were produced from the early 50's (I think) to the late 70's that dealt with the siege at Tobruk and the North Africa Campaign in one way or another. So without being really specific, the scene you describe could have come from any of a dozen or so films.

You smoke too much weed.

Papillion. 1970's or 1980's. I can't remember.

Ship, not ground.

I would tend to agree, Tobruk, staring Rock Hudson & George Pappard. The British tend to make more films on the North African campaign because they fought there from 1940-43, & you had Rommel & the African Korps. Hope this helps a bit.

It is a Humphrey Bogart movie. LuLuBell was the name of the tank. It was from the 1940's.

It’s a Humphrey Bogart movie

Racing with the Moon (1984). Sean Penn, Nicolas Cage. My nickname is close to Penn's name in the movie , which struck a chord with me.
