I'd like to talk to a fan of Michael Crichton.

I've been around this site for years, so I'll be brief.

I'm an avid fan of Michael Crichton, and I'm curious if anyone else here is as well. I've never met one in my life, despite the popularity of his work.

Anyone?

I don't think I would say I'm "avid" but I have read and enjoyed his work, although it's been several years. What are your general thoughts tonight?

Every time I touch bid work I walk away enlightened. I reread a classic, and found so much of his prophetic statement to have come true I don't think it should be ignored.

:D

After looking at a list of his books to remind myself which ones I've read, I think Airframe was the most current. Now I'm a little embarrassed.

I'm not sure I would agree with prophetic, but obviously does great research that mixes well with his fertile imagination and ability to make you feel his writing. Maybe I just haven't read the books you're talking about. Enlighten me.

In the book I just read, one of the characters predicts that using genetic technology to cure diseases would never catch on, because the company would attempt to charge $1,000 per pill, which would result in an outcry at the FDA, and a subsequent ban on the medication. (the character then contended that genetic power should instead be used for entertainment purposes if money were to be made... Specifically dinosaurs)

This year a medication called Sovaldi presented a 90% cure rate for hepatitis C. I'll let you guess what Gilead Sciences wanted to charge per pill, and what the governmental response was. :) The novel in question was likely penned around 1989.

I think it was pretty obvious even 30 years ago that pharmaceutical companies are to make money, but it's great that you are identifying with and feeling such passion for Crichton's writing. Which book are you talking about?

Btw, I'm extremely tired and am falling asleep, so maybe next time I'll have more insightful comments, but don't count on it.

I really do think he was a great writer and thinker.

Until we meet again!

Only Michael Crichton book I recal;l ever reading was Sphere. I enjoyed it though.

I've read,
Sphere
Congo
Jurassic Park 1 & 2
Timeline
Prey

and possibly 1 or 2 others I'm currently forgetting.

Congo was a fun book, but a hilariously butchered film adaptation!

What did you think of Prey?

Jurassic Park, Timeline, Next, State of Fear, Disclosure, Rising Sun, Andromeda Strain, Prey. Maybe more? Those are the ones I remember.

andromeda strain... So ahead of its time.

I vaguely remember reading Andromeda Strain as a kid and was so terrified towards the end of the novel. So terrified that my memory is foggy and perhaps repressed!

I would say I enjoyed Time Line and wasn't there a movie based on the book?
