Alright, I've had ICQ 2 times before. This is my 3rd experience with it.

Am I an idiot or is this the HARDEST chat program in the world to use?

The only message I have gotten from anyone so far was some silly woman wanting to "help" me out by giving me a link to a great porn site that her boyfriend uses when she isn't around.

Thanks, Linda. I've already got my addiction. You keep yours. :)

Hints, tips, etc. about ICQ welcomed.

Hi SS I have icq and don't have any problems with it.

Unless the people I want to talk to won't log on

I prefer to send messages and not open the chat window there, though.

Ditto.

I agree. It's overly complicated and I don't know what it does that IM doesn't. It also leaves traces of itself all over your HD after uninstalling it.

Bloatware.

Best feature it has that IM doesn't, in my book, is being able to leave messages for the person when they are offline. As soon as they sign in to ICQ, the message pops up for them.

i have it but never use it anymore. MSN and AIM are more user friendly.

I like that part of icq also.

Ditto. Not to mention, AIM leaves no history on your CPU. ICQ leaves a history file. And even after you erase that file, people who know dos can still read it. -grumbles and growls at hubby- Hubby proved that to me after I thought I was being 'sneaky' and erasing it.

Gilly, I have my icq set so it doesn't record a history

SimplySouthern (and anyone else who'd want it) if you keep ICQ, my number is 48193297.. :)

I like the 'being able to send offline messages' the best too, thats the only reason I keep it around.

I like ICQ because if have some very nice features that AIM and MSN doesn't have. Like you can be on-line invisible, so only those you have on your invisible list can see when you're on. And so many more as well.

But I do use MSN and AIM quite often as well I'll admit that.

ICQ was great in the early versions when it did not have so much random crap on it. I don't use it much now because of all the crap.

In MSN you can go invisible but cant leave off line messages, but Yahoo you can do all of it ......invisible , leave off lines messages, and is very reliable ....well IM is on it .......

lisa and i use icq and irc to chat while shes away

i love icq because i love seeing her name go blue when she comes online and it makes that knock knock noise :) im easierly pleased i guess

the program does have some great sound effects to it doesnt it?
the wicked laughing, the typewriter, the old car horns etc...

icq

I have Icq, Yahoo instant messanger and AOL instant messanger

I prefer ICQ because of the history file, and the sms feature.

Hate it, hate it, hate it!! The thing is pure evil. And, yes, it's wickedly complicated. Finally got rid of it after not using it for months. Much prefer AIM and MSN.

I used to use it alot buit with so many people now using MSN no one ever talks with me on ICQ anymore. I have been thinkng of uninstalling it.

Good thing about it is that it saves a message for you while your gone.

Bad thing is that if you install it on another machine you have to add the people to your list again.

Two types of messenger services

ICQ and AIM are getting closer and closer, especially since AOL purchased Mirabilis last year. MSN and Yahoo are pretty much the same format, though MSN forces you to have a passport and Yahoo an account there. Personally, I have found Odigo, a messenger started from the remnants of the ICQ development crew, to be quite good, though a little unstable at times.

http://www.odigo.com

It allows offline messages, and voice chat, etc. You can also incorporate your buddy lists from Yahoo, AIM, and ICQ with it, making it a cross-platform messenger.

(by the way, I am not afiliated with Odigo in any manner except as a user)

adding your contacts

You can backup your contact list and use the database converter to import it.

I believe that the newest version also stores your contacts on the icq server.

I've got ICQ and have used it a lot, all my family that are online have it and it's a good way to leave non urgent messages for people I've also done some wicked cybering on ICQ to.

I hate AOL because after spending much time and sweat setting it up and giving it all my details and Email addy and any other shit it asked for it crashed and told me it couldn't log me in at the moment....!?!.....so I left it for a week tried again and it did the same thing, I thought third times a charm and that time it crashed my PC.....unforgivable.

MSN I've never tried but I remember it was only a little while back that you where all bitching about it not working for weeks on end here on the BB so I may not bother I also hear it's unstable and prone to passing virus's to it's users so I'm in no big hurry there then.

BTW if you want my ICQ number then PM me and I'll send it to you.

you can use all of them and even better like being signed on all your msn names, aim names and yahoo names all at once using this program called trillian it's a bit confusing at first if you are not too comp litterate but once you figure it all out it's worth it don't remember what the address to d/l it is but i believe it's trillian.com trust me once you use it you won't want to go back to anything else. Now for icq lol once aol bought it it went downhill from there it's a memory hog for one and it's also a security threat to your comp by wannabe hackers since it has plenty of security issues when you use icq

I have ICQ and I really like it. I only have one phone line so messages can come through ICQ. I also like it because if Im writing I can minimize it and get on with what Im doing. I have MSN as well and really like that too but prefer ICQ. :)
