A friend of mine pelted me with dvd's today. A bunch of more-or-less classic movies "that everyone should have seen", but I haven't.

A Clockwork Orange, Easy Rider, Network, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Soylent Green, the original Planet of the Apes, The Thing...

Thing is, since they're so iconic, I already know the plot and I've seen random clips of them ad nauseum.

Which ones are worth watching anyway?

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is one of my all-time favorite books and movies. Most definitely worth watching, IMO.

One Flew is great. I also enjoy Easy Rider. Network is an iconic film but does nothing for me. The rest are pretty meh.

Good movies are more than the sum total of random clips. Watch them!

Every time I tried to watch A Clockwork Orange, I fell asleep. All I remember is a weird eyelash.

All of those are pretty classic movies. Cuckoo and Clockwork probably would lead the pack...but Network and Easy Rider are right behind. The others are also very iconic...

Am I saying you must watch them all right now back-to-back in a marathon...? No. But you should watch them eventually.

I take it none of them fall into the "pointless with spoilers" category then?

See Citizen Kane. It's the most iconic when it comes to film as film.

At various points, it feels like you're watching a modern movie - the reason being that so many directors and actors took cues from the methods used in Kane to make the flicks we see nowadays.

ROSEBUD! Most certainly!

Nope - well unless you saw the Phil Hartman sketches on SNL in the 90's about Soylent Green.

Cuckoos Nest holds up, as does Soylent Green, one of my favorite movies. At some point in our future, they will make food out of people.....Planet of the Apes is good because that chick Heston takes as his own is hot....If he hadnt seen the Statue of Liberty, he could of been pretty darn happy in the future...

good movie, way too long....saw it in High School, never could sit and watch it again. Still, a masterpiece

Yeah..but a great classic movie. Watch it every so often. Now Apocalypse Now....LONG movie. Especially Redux

Nova - I met her in person. She lives in Maryland and was 50ish at the time. I think she did a cameo in the updated movie

Cuckoos nest hands down. Timeless. Excellent. Read the book too. Very different feel but even better than the monie

Easy Rider & Planet of the Apes

Both classic & 60's cult musts!

When film making was somewhat simplistic, without special effects, and actually told a story of some interest, not just mind numbing nonsense. ;)

spoilers are meaningless. don't worry about shit like that. if the movie is good figuring out the ending before it happens won't suddenly make it bad and if it's bad no amount of surprise will make it better.

also, how old is this friend? those fucking movies are all from the seventies or the very end of the sixties except the thing.
