Humid would be my guess. The swamps aren't too far from the city - in fact the city has been intruding into the swamp areas for over a 100 years.

New Orleans in the fall is wonderful. Right now, it is still hot and sticky, same as it is here, 5 hours north. But the architecure in the vieux carrre (the touristy old part) helps to deal with the humidity. The greenery and shade offered in the courtyards, combined with the fountains help to cool things off, and the wine, music, food and good company do the rest. Highly recommended any time of the year, my suggestion is to visit either after the heat breaks for the summer in the fall and early winter (GREAT opportunities for unique christmas gifts) or in the spring, when everything is greening and blooming and the summer heat has not yet settled in upon the city. For some good descriptive writing of the city at various times of year, check out the Delta Stories series by Sheath here on Lit.

There's a great Audubon Zoo too. Mardis Gras is really cool in Mobile Alabama too. Naw'lins is a blast whenever you go, if you're planning for next Mardis Gras get cracking, I'm guessing rooms are hard to reserve already. That place fills up quick.

I've found some great deals on hotels in late November, like the week or two after Thanksgiving...mid December. No one is there then, and the hotels give great prices. Just make sure you don't go down during the 'big game'...whenever that is...too crazy then...unless crazy is what you're looking for.
