... how some of the readers vote.

Last night I was rather disppointed to see my latest story sitting at 3.19. Maybe that's not surprising since it is a non-erotic story. But this morning it's sitting at 4.12.

I'm beginning to find this whole voting thing confusing.

I've had the rating on my story (my first, see siggy for link) drop dramatically twice only to have Laurel come in and remove the offending vote, and it goes back up. Not sure what the criteria she has for removing votes, but I know it's done quite a bit.

While on this topic, I have seen people post saying they have a bunch of votes that are of a certain number (like several 5s or hit with a string of 1s). Is there actually a way to find out what kind of votes you are getting, or are these people just guessing based on the number of votes and what their ratings are?

Here's the thing with the votes. figuring out the numbers is an increasingly difficult problem. It's determined by the number of votes. Each additional vote is adds another variable to the equation. For example.

1 Vote 4.0
2 Votes 3.0 equals 4 + 2 = 3.0
3 Votes 2.66 equals 4 + 2 +2 = 2.6667
4 Votes 2.75 equals 4 +2 +2 +3 = 2.75

Now look at 10 votes with an outcome of 3.2. To give a sum of 32 (10x3.2) you have at least 5 combinations of 1, 2,3,4 & 5.

As the number of votes increases, the number of possible combinations increases exponentially.

Oh well :(

Yeah, that's what I figured. I would think considering the different possible combinations, figuring out what each vote is would be next to impossible (if not totally so).

Not if you are obsessed by your votes and look at your score hourly. Then one more vote can be worked out. If you had 10 votes and a score of 4 and then the 11th vote made the score different you can work out exactly what the 11th vote was.

After the first two or three stories you don't care (or is that after the first 20 or 30? I've forgotten).

If you are really desperate to know you can save the viewed submissions every day (or print the pages out) and compare over time or even enter them in a spreadsheet.

Og

Og,

Are you going to enter the current contest? Jenny has, and with a good story. But as we discussed in PM's, its score is being hurt by the lack of sex. That's dumb, even by usual voting patterns, since the story's in the non-erotic category.

Actually, the latter, even with just two votes, for example, whose average is 3.5. There could be a 3 and 4, or a 2 and 5.

However, apart from the first rush of votes on incest stories, after a couple days, few stories will have more than a vote coming in every hour, or even--after a week-- in a day. So, as others have said, and taking the example above: you will not know how the average got that way. But if, one vote later, the average is 4, you know you just got a 5. (For large numbers in the hundreds, one can't be quite so sure, because of roundoff.)

I watched my first story very close and it humors me now to think what a waste that was! As I figured each vote. I guess at first it is a way to see what the reader thinks of your work when the feedback dwindles down.

But it really makes no sense until you have 100 or more votes, at this time you get a better average with the 1s and 5s being setback you can see how it rated overall.

To get a one or five may just be because it was an easy mark on the scale or the person liked you and initially it fluctuates the score too much to be an accurate account of your work. Frustrating to watch, better off not looking every day!

Rate the feeback that is someone who most likely read the story.

RF is quite right. There are at least two things about this story that I would expect to lower the voting score. First it is non-erotic so the usual wankers will not like it. And second it is pretty much a "Girly" story. It's about emotion and feelings rather than the usual bump and grind on Lit. So I would expect most guys to find it unappealing.

However, with he number of votes cast on this story, there must be a large number of 1's and 2's to debilitate the score to it's present place. I'm wondering if there has been a change in the readers on Lit. Usually the 1's and 2' simply hit the back button and go on without voting at all. Interesting.

I did recieve a feedback last night on the story that characterized it as a "feel good" story. That's exactly right, although much of the text is dark and dismal, filled with fear and longing. But then, how do you have a feel good story without that?

We'll see how it comes out in a few days.

Laughing under my breath,

Jenny

Laurel must have done some house cleaning last night, because I noticed some relatively drastic changes in the ratings between yesterday and today, including with my story.

Yesterday I was at 4.82 with 187 votes, this morning when I logged onto the site I noticed my votes were down to 180 but my rating had jumped to 4.86.

I was totally confused, for weeks I watched my story stagnate around 4.81 and all of a sudden this big change and I had actually lost votes.

I noticed this had happened to other stories as well, all of them rising in ratings and losing a few votes. I thought maybe the system had glitched, but after reading this thread I am more inclined to believe they just cleared out a lot of the troll votes.

Now I'm more confused than ever. Last night the number of votes dropped while the vote score went up substantially. This morning there are three more votes which appear to be all 5's.

And feedback in my email which consists of a list of horror anthologies.

Shaking head,

Jenny:confused:

Laurel, doing her periodic Troll Trashing, I think. One of mine got the votes up/numbers down treatment too.

Alex

Alex,
If that's true then Laurel deserves a lot of credit. The story posted in just a few hours and within a day or so she is making those corrections.

Thank you, Laurel

I guess I was totally wrong in overestimating the intellegence of the Trolls on Lit.

As I said this morning I would look at the vote scores tonight. And what did I find? A long series of 1's.

How very interesting that there are so many people on Lit how are unable to count beyond their dicks.

Oh well.

Jenny,

For some reason, the little single digit IQ Lit trolls seem to be more active in this contest than during the last two. I guess they're all Grinches who haven't gotten into the holiday spirit. Bah, humbug.

It seems like every morning I've lost a few votes but gotten a slightly higher (make that less low) score. By the end of the day, if I've picked up some votes, the score has dipped. This type of see-saw during the Nude Day contest is what got the Great Og and I joking about finishing last.

In a way, it's kind of fun to watch the the changing numbers.

LMAO

I started tracking the votes this afternoon. It was incredably low (3.2 or something) last night. This morning Laural had cleared out the Trolls and it was 4.87

From there I have one 4, one three and enough 1's to bring it down to 4.12.

This is rediculous. Sort of reminds one of voting in the South ;)

Laurel deserves a lot of credit.

I suppose she does but I don't see how she can tell whether or not a vote is valid. My stories are basically just smut but that is what a lot of people come here looking for so I might have a score of 4.75 or something like that. Then an English teacher comes along and says "This story has no plot or character development or anything else", and then give it a "1". That would be a valid vote but Laurel would probably eliminate it. On the other hand, a series of English teachers might be giving it all ones or twos, and then some guy comes along looking for something to stroke to and gives it a "5". That would also be a valid vote but would probably be eliminated. Probably any vote that is far out of line with the other votes would be cleaned out.

Laurel's only criteria for an invalid vote is that it came frem the same source as another vote. I believe that definition includes a series of one votes on multiple stories by the same person.

Laurel will not remove a vote simply because it's a one and she's as likely to remove a five vote as a one vote. She's also unwilling to explain the tests applied to determine that a vote is from the same person except to say it's NOT just multiple votes from the same logged ISP.

Reading this thread I decided to have a look too. Guess what: my little red H is back.

Question: how does L. knows to erase votes? The 1-s could be very unjustified, but couldn't the 5-s be just as well?

BT, prepare to be enlightened by the wise words of Weird Harold. RF

What's to be confused about? Show me an author arguing about a 5 and I'll show you someone that questioned an A on one of the school papers. ;)

You knew someone who got an A on a school paper? Must of been a teacher's kid.

I resent that remark.

Didn't you know I am the teacher?

:D ;)
OND,

What can I tell you? I'm sure you know the drill. Students ALWAYS earn an A but they're ALWAYS given a D or F.

RF

Wrong.

All students deserve a C.
Big mouths get an F.
Bringing flowers and candy gets you an A.

Man, you really didn't pay attention did you? ;)
