Do you have another .avi file you can try to see if it's the player or the .avi file? (You probably do have a sample avi file or two somewhere in the windows directory -- use the search function to find one.)

If Windows Media player won't play any .avi file, then you're missing a part of the media player installation or some other program has installed an incompatible .avi decoder.

Did you download the file from an online community? I've gotten corrupted .avi files before... people rip them themselves and sometimes they don't do it correctly. So what WH said - can you play other .avi files? If so the problem is with that particular avi and not with your player or computer.

I have exactly the same problem with WMP 7.01 - never played .avi files since it was installed including those installed with windows such as clock.avi.

Haven't got around to finding a fix so hope someone comes up with the answer here

You could try using a freeware/shareware player instead of Windows Media Player and see what happens.

Go to http://www.tucows.com and search for "avi" - try downloading Cliprex 2.0 or MoviePlay 3.28 or Sureview 4.02 or Unique Div-X 1.0.14 or any of the other players available.
